New to music. Looking for some direction

Post by Fue » Tue Jun 05, 2012 12:35 am

I just purchased an mpk49 and it came with abelton live 8 lite. I really want to get the whole understanding of how to use ableton to create sound design. I pretty much know how to navigate the DAW. But I want to learn how to use my mental creativity and make some music. I was thinking of taking a online course to bring me up to speed. Ive been looking at courses offered by Dubspot, Quantize Courses, Berkleemusic, just to name a couple. I was looking for some honest feedback on to which direction you would recommend (speaking to all of you abelton live users on the site) Thanks a head of time

i be first to welcome with open arm.
now what you need to go say is "you want to go learn LIVE" and no go say "you want to learn ABLETON".
someone say to me that ABLETON is the company. and that to LIVE is the product. i never knew until they go corect me on it.

I'd recommend trying to get involved with your local scene and meeting people who are into producing music. The studio sessions I've had with more experienced producers have equaled months of watching tutorials.
I havent tried the online course route myself, but have heard good things about a few of em.
Also this forum can be a great source of knowledge :)

You are looking for music production - to not be mistaken with music.
If you are new to music then you have to listen to lots of it. You have to expose yourself for all kind of subtile differencies that exist in music and sound in general.
For being the music producer you can be deaf. The only ability required is counting to four and spending all your money on unnecessary gear which you have to collect constantly - more gear = better music = Justin take it to the balls...
I would advice you, if you're after music then sell all the electronic shit and buy a decent piano...
Cheers.

Im sorry let me be a little more clear. Im not new to listening to music. I listen to music for about 10 hours a day. My employement allows me to do so. What I am new to is Music Production. And I just want to give myself a good chance on learning so that I can use my creativity and develope my own sounds and beats etc.

study the manuals to become familiar with all important tools in the system, then find answers for whatever questions are left in the forums and youtube. if you do this you will learn quickly

Whether PC or Mac, I highly recommend checking out the MacProVideo monthly subscription ($25/mo, cancel or pause anytime) for online viewing, and watching the tutorials on Live 8 and Music Theory, along with selections from the Studio & Recording Techniques section.

As mentioned, the information in the tutorials will be pertinent whether on a Mac or a PC (except for tutorials on Mac specific applications), and the value is crazy at the subscription level, if you have the time available and a good internet connection.

An excellent book on creativity is "Effortless Mastery: Liberating the Master Musician Within by Kenny Werner." It is more about being a creative artist, and opening to one's inner voice, and could be a complement to all of the technical and theory heavy study you will be doing.
