Pismo Powerbook
Pismo Powerbook
Is anyone here using an upgraded Pismo powerbook?
I am on the verge of getting the G4 550 MHZ upgrade. I am fishing for opinions on the upgrade.
Best regards,

I have found the upgrade at http://daystartechnology.com for ~ usd $289.
I love the form factor of my Pismo so I would not ditch it for an iBook.

I've got a 500mhz pismo, 60g drive, 512 ram, firewired to an m-audio 410. It's a sweet setup for me, not much to complain about, especially as I've not used a faster machine. I'm curious to hear about the upgrade if you get it.

I stuck the G3 900 powerlogix upgrade in one and it makes it totally usable. If your demands arent too much from live you could do worse - dont know about the G4 one, but this went from sluggish to usable. I use my PC for live though, but given Live 5 has freeze etc I reckon you could get more out of it. They are a nice machine because you can get up to 1GB ram in it and the CDR and battery bays mean you can interchange it, use 2 batteries if you like or upgrade the cd-drive - I bought a CDRW for it on ebay too. In the end I probably should have just saved up and got a new machine the amount I spent in the end, but they are a nice PB.
the G3 900 also has a 1MB cache as opposed to 512k for the G4
from the power logix site:
The Blue Chip G3 Pismo for PowerBook G3 FireWire (aka "Pismo") laptops provides the processing power of the PowerPC 750FX or GX G3 chip to give your PowerBook G3 "Pismo" never before seen performance for a fraction of the cost of a new PowerBook G4. Tests show the BlueChip G3 Pismo 900 outperforms the G4 500MHz even in applications that use Altivec. Add the advantage of "on the fly" CPU speed reduction to save battery life, and it is no wonder we sold the G3/900 by a margin of 4:1 over the G4/500; that is, until we discontinued the G4.
