Why Do We Newbies Suffer?
Why Do We Newbies Suffer?
I`m going to upset a few people here but it seems to me that when someone new to this program(including myself) asks for help that some people think everyone should know they get nil or at most sarcastic response to their questions, why is this?

Because they ask stupid questions and have dumb screen names
just kidding - people with hundreds of posts get clowned everyday - just start posting and eventually you'll get the answer your looking for, or you'll be like 'these guys are dumb'
fyi - use the search function though - saves you some embarassment
questions not to ask
Does Ableton have timestretch capabilities?
Do I get Operator for free if I upgrade to 5?
Whats the difference between session view and arrangement view?
What's better PC or Mac?
What's a real dj - in your opinion?
Anything related to Sasha but Plastikman is OK (rolls eyes)
You get the idea[/b]

i've answered lots of very basic questions, the answers to all of which can be found by doing some mild searching -- i remember what starting out was like.
the only thing that rubs me the wrong way are the posts where it's completely obvious that the poster has made NO attempt to find the answer first... or even look at the most recent pages of forum. or realize that there is a tips & tricks section.
use the forum search function. the manual is actually really well written. and check deeper in the ableton site people; they have some excellent tutorials there, including for things that have been asked about in just the past few days...
i think the majority of people here who've been here for a while really do like helping new folks. but no one likes to wipe noses.

well ive also noticed the explosion of noobs on the forum recently...strange phenomenon or live has been doing some good marketing. good to see people using live more though
ps theres nothing wrong with asking questions but try to research on your end as good as you can--or you'll end up like that guy who asked if live did timestretching (when thats what it boasts clearly on the box) that was unforgetable

maybe it is because the reason that Live is so successful is that a paraplegic goat could understand how to use it
Yet, there are still people who have no clue, yet they claim to have some sort of drive to produce music, but struggle with the simplest software on the planet.
The movie "dumn and dumber" and Jim Carey with his tongue stuck against the ski-lift pole springs to mind when some fuckwit posts some dumbass question on the forum :

A good start is posting with a descriptive subject......
"I have a question"
"Questions...."
"Do you know how"
Those as post subjects aren't a good way start.......
"Using X to control Y?"
"How does X work with clips?"
Is much better.
Then it's good practice to use sentences rather than random words followed by a full-stop.

Any forum I have ever been on has a low tolerance of newbs asking really, really obvious questions.
This one isn't actually that bad.
Also in this case there is probably (for some) as sense of eliteism, See - Live serves a lot of types of folks ...
some have been educated for many many years over old style desks and trad studios, playing real instruments, effects are big black rack mount things. - this group use Live as a quick writing platform.
there is a second group who have never seen the inside of an old style studio, they dont know the background terminology of audio and just want to jump in and make some noise.
you can see that these two might just clash a bit.
regarding the inrush of new and not too informed types recently : it's as if some kind of really well known DJ has been talking about how he uses live or something ... and drawn a whole crowd of 'just starting out' DJs toward the app ... hmm, can't think who.
aaaarrrgh!

Re: Why Do We Newbies Suffer?
I know what you mean. I think many have this belief that Ableton Live is super easy to use. Its not. Put this software in front of a complete newbie or an experienced daw user for that matter and it can be a very head scratching experience. + it just got a lot more complex with version five.Advent57 wrote:I`m going to upset a few people here but it seems to me that when someone new to this program(including myself) asks for help that some people think everyone should know they get nil or at most sarcastic response to their questions, why is this?
For a complete newbie Live is going to take quite a bit of time to get to know.
Then again this just shows that Ableton Live is maturing with each release.

man that thing is good reading and boy the things you can learn that you never thought you could
at first its just reading the manual...but after indexing though the thing many many times it clearly becomes the fucking manual...i know when i need to sort something the first thing that pops through my mind is "where is the fucking manual"
RTFM is a positive, constructive, helpful reply..that could lead the noob into a deeper understanding of things they never even thought about
i mean isn't fucking intament??? so once you have a nice relationship with the thing you can fuck it
so to all the noobs out there make sure your subject heading will get hits from a forum search!!
