Bass guitar for pretty lights style music

Post by GLJdrew » Tue Jun 12, 2012 8:17 pm

Hello everybody,

I've been working at getting some bass tracks in my mixes that resemble some of Pretty Lights' music. If you've never heard any of his live bass recordings heres a good example, bass comes in around 44 seconds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k90h7OTzze8

He sometimes sythesizes bases, but to me this sounds live an electric bass.

I've played guitar for 8 years and am thinking about getting a bass, not to master or anything but to play some ideas in the studio, as well as have available to clients. Any suggestions for a bass that would be able to get me this sound/good playability at a fair price for a beginner? I'm willing to pay more for good tone because I plan on keeping this bass around..Budget around 700-900

Appreciate the help!

You can never go wrong with a Fender Precision or Jazz model. While the quality of the Mexican and Japanese models have increased over the past couple of years, you can probably find an American model used that's within your price range. I recently picked up a 2010 Precision for $800, which is about half the price of it new. That said you could always go with a Mexican model. It's not like they sound bad, just that the overall build quality and playability will be less than an American. But if you're just starting out then that might be the way to go.

The Jazz has more tonal options than the Precision, but the Precision has an unmistakable tone that is unique to that model.

i think that's a synthesized bass meant to sound like a real one. i know he uses a lot of samples, too.

check out OLP basses- they licensed ernie balls designs and made them hecka cheap. i have an music man 4-string knockoff that sound great, and it was like $200.

I've been reading up on the P and J basses, they seem to be very common and I bet it's for a reason. I think I'm leaning towards a jazz bass, one of my friends is selling an active jazz for $400.. seems like a good deal new for 750

thanks!
