Are there any good (hopefully free or inexpensive) programs I can use to compose music with traditional music notation and then easily play it back in Live 8?

There is Notation Composer and Notation Musician from: http://www.notation.com and relatively inexpensive. It may fit your needs for composing. I believe it can export to standard MIDI format as well. I haven't used that software in a long time...I think it may still be installed on my DAW....gonna make me go look one of these days!
