Re: Making beats
If You want to make beat with a "feel", and not program them, then you needed to use something else than your mouse and keyboard.
You Ned to play like an instrument. So you can use an mpd midi with drum rack, or use machine, or an mpc renaaissance and record audio, or a midi keyboard, etc.

Re: Making beats
Spend a few quid on a tambourine and make some shakers from kitchen stuff. Record on any old mic, even your laptop.
Both can really add groove to a rhythm track and help the whole mix to 'gel'.

I wonder if I'm the only person who uses wooden sticks to hit things to make beats still.

Re: Making beats
If you find that you can't 'play' to record your beat.. get a pre-made drum loop that you like... put it into arrangement view... highlight the clip... cntrl/click choose 'slice to new midi track' from the drop down menu.. Live will create a new midi track with a drum rack containing the samples of the beat and a midi clip that contains the midi notes for the samples.. from here you can rearrange 'timing', 'hits' 'velocity' etc till your hearts content... If you back into session/mixer view you can open the mixer for the drum rack to reveal all the audio channels where you can add effects, change overall volumes to each individual drum hit (sample).... Hours of fun!

Just keep experimenting... and yes try to work on you playing the beats and recording them .. here's a video I saw back in the day that I still find really inspiring http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YBe-86l5F8
