Insight into Abletons Beta Testing Timeframes?

Post by db2 » Mon Jul 09, 2012 4:18 pm

Can anyone infer from past beta releases approximately how long Ableton tends to keep releases in Beta status?

I've just built a new machine and am trying to decide whether to load up this beta or to hold off until the official release. Any information is much appreciated!

Doesn't matter.. you can have the release version and beta versions both installed without problems. Generally they put out a beta.. people use it.. if there's problems - they are reported, and hopefully fixed. Not knowing what problems a user might encounter or how long it might take to code a fix all factors into the length of time between betas, releases, etc..

With Live 8 for instance.. I had easily 20 different beta versions installed prior to that version being a deemed a 'release'..

If you're planning on holding off until release - you better cross your fingers that it works for you without issues. This is what the public testing is all about - finding issues, and getting them fixed before a official release.

I personally think it would be pointless to wait if you are planning on moving to 64bit. Get your feet wet, find any issues you might encounter before you dive in..

Hi db2,

we will release 8.4 when we think (and actually see from the usage data) that it is ready for primetime, whenever that is. So it is very hard to give you an estimation.

Regarding which version you should use, I would also recommend to install both versions, the current 32-bit release version (currently 8.3.3) and the current 64-bit beta version (currently 8.4b2). You can run them side by side and see which works best for you.

I will lock this thread now to make it easier for us to keep track of the open issues.

Regards, Bernd.
