My friend is doing something with synthesis for his graphic design course. He sent me a message detailing exactly what he wanted, and I thought i'd post it up here to see if any of the good people on this forum could lend a hand:
Basically looking for some sort of program that allows the user to connect a hardware synth to their computer. The controls on the synthesizer would allow to mix up and mess with the frequencies(appearance) of basic shapes/colours on the screen.
Each note on the keyboard would represent a colour, colours would brighten or darken at higher and lower octaves.
You play music with the keyboard and the colours of the notes would appear on screen. Take for example any 1 colour... as you twist a knob on the synth the hue/saturation might change. The cutoff/ resonance knobs etc could alter the appearance of the colour and shape of a note.. Each know would distort the colour shape in different ways.
You'd be able to tell when looking at the final piece that someone has messed with the 'cutoff' of a colour blue, or put a 'delay' on red as they played that colour.
Is there a program that would be able to do this?

Re: College Project Question
I would look into Max: http://cycling74.com/
...if done in Max, it could always be ported into Live via M4L, but given your problem description I suspect this could be done with Max/Jitter alone...

Forget the mapping and just run your audio through this:

(almost) the best 20 quid I ever spent.
It's the main reason why I don't feel the need to go to gigs.
