cmcpress, that is bang on.
(although I think the Spiral Tribe thing is a red herring. It was collectives like them that distorted Rave from urban multicultural working class hedonism to white middle class student/crusty/counterculture/anarchist pastoralism. Lots of converted ambulances, Jack Russells, and signing on the dole in several Wiltshire towns after they came along. Still, infinitely better than what we have now)
Where did you find that strip?

Seems to be a bit of klf hero worship in that comic. How ironic. Besides, the klf would be quite impressed with the likes of tiesto.
Between, the manual describing how to make a hit out of other people's ideas and talent and the burn a million quid publicity stunt, it's seems they weren't exactly purists. Got to love them, but they played the superstar game as well as anyone.
Funny comic, but really just taking the piss out of certain big name DJs and their fans.

Most people pick up on music by listening to radio, seeing stuff mentioned in their local newspaper, watching TV, etc. They might get recommendations from friends, but those friends are also exposed to the same sources. Only hipsters, record collectors and musicians listen to non-commercial radio, read music rags and blogs, etc. That means the general public is only exposed to what's actively promoted by the media companies.beatmunga wrote:doghouse: a very valid angle which I struggle to disagree with at all. I would perhaps take issue with where the 'blame' lies though - you seem to suggest shadowy corporations manipulating the punters, which is valid, but I would go further and lay some responsibility on the punters who still seem to lap it all up. They should think about what they are spending their money on, I suppose. Vote with their wallets.
The musical tastes of the average person are fully formed by the time they're 30, high school and college years are when they're most likely to be swayed into listening to something new and different. The average concertgoer will pay $$$ to see a big name act at an arena but is uninterested in hearing unknown (to them) acts playing local watering holes.
I don't really blame the media companies. They are doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing in a capitalist marketplace, making profits for shareholders. It's just unfortunate.
Re: Live music is killing music!
Which is why festivals are good. You go for a few acts you know you want to see and end up discovering new ones you hadn't heard of.

man that comic never ended, kinda cute and funny though. my only issue is that is says Adagio for Strings was "never a good song". its not a song... Adagio for Strings is a work by Samuel Barber, arranged for string orchestra from the second movement of his String Quartet, Op. 11. i'd like to see you weak programmers/djs ever write something like that. show some respect to real music if your gonna get all preachy about some dj you dont like. "not a good song".. whatever. why dont you get a music theory book before you start talking shit. so tiesto is killing rave culture? didn't raves pan out in 1997?
Re: Live music is killing music!
he doesn't mean barber's adagio for strings. He means tiesto's fucking dross version:bartend7 wrote:man that comic never ended, kinda cute and funny though. my only issue is that is says Adagio for Strings was "never a good song". its not a song... Re: Live music is killing music!
Not sure Bill would agree with that, but I could possibly find out for you. I think Bill' more into choirs with his H17 project nowadays.andydes wrote:Besides, the klf would be quite impressed with the likes of tiesto..
I like to think he'd think Tiesto was too po faced for their tastes. Stadium house was meant to be a piss take, not a model.

The fact that the original has been used on 2 critically acclaimed major movies (The Elephant Man and Platoon) is enough for most popular culture vultures to know that Tiesto is merely interpreting the genius of the master, Sir William of Orbitshire.
Never heard of this Barber fella.
