western music is of course much much better than eastern music but only when you listen to it further west by a minimum of 180 degrees.

why do you think one should be better (and by which parameter ?!) than the other...
and how can you rough cut all music in the world into 2 groups ?
silly...
it's like asking if computer music is better than acoustic instrument music..
there's no competition here..
today everything is getting fused anyways.. minds are more open imo.. and consequently so are ears to different sounds..

that said... and very generally speaking...
"eastern" classical forms tend to be much more complex than "western"/equal-tempered forms..
which are a bit more structured..and much more rigid..
traditional music from the warmer parts of the world tends to offer more complex poly-rhythms..
and generally a different approach to music..
and does not shy away from "tension" and dissonance..

regardless... been loving this guy lately ..

and I admit I prefer this over the opera any day...
but that's just a matter of taste..

While sit in an ivory tower debating which is better there are 1000s of people out there producing music that incorporates the best bits of both.

Get on it!

East:West is an old distinction that doesn't function in a global culture. What is Korean pop music? East Asian vocals, R&B productions. What is hip hop? American? Western? African? Yoruba? I suppose you can pretend that at one time there was a culture that isn't already part of a global network of trade and cultural transmission, but...

Jerry Goodman and Jan Hammer made a track called Country and Eastern Music - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsBNnyvYTo8

It's one of my favourite tracks of all time!
