For the past few years Techno has been runined by german and swedish producers constantly churning out souless loop techno.
wtf
dude the swed's/german's got no soul???your listening to the wrong lot!!

detroits got soul for certain

and there is no techno it's all HOUSE MUSIC

and the supper loopy tunes let the DJ inject their soul into the mix via extrem mixing and mix tricks

i'm not into catagorizing but it helps to find tunes that will mix with your current play selection

Lets back it up a little...

WHAT IS SOUL? please explain it before the next person tries using it to generalise a whole country's music output...

We need soundbites, so we can listen, and then argue some more!!

tech-house is a techno-like sorta house groovy thing that has alot of those house sounds going round, but in a techno-vibe.

techno is tech-house, but without those housy sounds and the term was coined alot earlier in musical history. (this means some tunes, that came out as being techno, are now called proto-tech-house, 'cause, yeah, you c?)

ok, now a little bit more serious.

tech-house was coined, 'cause there was a significant difference between e.g. Dave Angel - Globetrotting and Tobias Schmidt - Destroy. check it out, you'll feel the difference

Go and listen to Chris Leibings stuff. He seems to the German up and coming Techno star and he plays and composes LOOP TECHNO. Is he an innovator like Juan, Carl, Derrick, Clarke, Mills.? No, he sounds like any other Loop techno producer except he has better PR.

This wasnt a criticism of germany or sweden as a nation at all. After five years of constant loop techno that sounds exactly the same as it did five years ago its obvious TO ME that the clubbers are piss bored of it.

One of my favourite labels is City Centre Offices. THERES a label with a future and some superb acts. This label is German!

I love and care deeply about the dance scene. Techno used to be the sound that influenced all other genres. It doesnt anymore.

Record sales are at an all time low. One of Germanies biggest Techno distributors called CPL shut down a few months ago

doesnt that tell you something?

The bottom line is composing Loop techno is very easy. Thats probably why theres so much of it around.

PS
House music is not Techno

wow this is novel, a debate about music on the Ableton forum!

:D

Some of my best ever nights out have been to what I would call techno - meaning high 130s into 140s bpm, with chopped syncopated conga-percussion type loops and mad synthetic sounds, but it takes a certain kind of mood, I dont have the constitution to handle listening to alot of it on a daily basis and for me alot of it only works loud

What I would have called tech-house would be slower and funkier/groovier and more listenable on a regular basis - mostly what I listen to - you get Tom Stephan playing alot on his kiss radio show ( www.kiss100.com )(although I think he calls it Tribal House which would probably invoke a slightly different image to my mind from alot of what he plays these days)

Also Alot of the weekend night DJs on Paris' Radio FG: www.radiofg.com/live play what I'd be tempted to call tech-house, just because the vibe is housey, but alot of the sounds are techy, but it might well be being called something else.

In my mind to just call something "house" leaves it a little open to being slotted in with that vocal US garagey stuff that could probably be played by a real band with funk bass lines and diva singers - not that there's anything wrong with that but if I went into a record shop asking for house that's not what I'd be hoping to hear. So for that reason the term I seem to have settled on is "underground house", which seems to be close enough.

I am really fighting the urge to post in this thread. It has Vince Watson active and people are mentioning G Flame = The Advent (= Mr.G = Mango Boy = Colin McBean) and all other kinds of niceness. I'm going to get too opinionated and passionate about it all and probably piss myself and others off and at the end of the day...who gives a shit?

This is the "Mac or PC?" of dance music discussions!

Just call it crossover and bring the dance!!

**EDIT**

WFT? I failed to realise that slowtechno had revived a 5 year old thread! lol. My answer would have been the same 5 years ago!

I think music is subjective and personal, so house to one person could be techno to the other - all depends on your level of knowledge and experience. Whoever said that house = techno is right from a historic perspective (house = anything played in a wareHOUSE). This was coined back in the very early days in Chicago and inspired the Detroit first wave. It was Juan Atkins record that coined the term techno ("Techno! The New Sound of Detroit"), but remember that they were inspired by the sounds coming out of Chicago at the time (think Ron Hardy & Frankie Knuckles). So again, it's a personal thing, so the crowds you run with and the parties/clubs you attend will color your perspective otherwise everyone will be chiming in with their own perspective of what "techno" is :)

Shameless self promotion, this is what I think tech- house is:

Know You Believe

Sorry for the history lesson, but I love his stuff!!!
