PSY 'Gangnam style' - K-Pop

Post by ShelLuser » Mon Aug 06, 2012 7:02 pm

Hi gang,

Most likely many of you may already know this one but today I came across this for the first time and considering that I really liked it figured I might as well share the stuff here.

PSY (aka Park Jae-Sang) is a South Korean rapper / singer and his latest album features a number called Gangnam style (link) which is not only a catchy tune (IMO) the videoclip itself is also fun to look at.

IMO that clip also parodies a little how silly some of the modern videoclips actually are. I love the part where PSY and 2 female dancers walk in a huge wind of paper and other junk where the dancers have visible trouble keeping the stuff out of their faces and PSY obviously sings on as if nothing is wrong.

AND the video clip features an explosion too, what else do you need? ;-)

Another cool feat is the official Making off Gangnam style (link). This really gives you a good image of how silly some moves and scenes look when you take away the music.

I also love the way the crew around PSY often can't help laughing out loud (like that female dancer in the merry-go-round). Feels much more relaxed and normal. Way less arrogant than some of the hip Western "big" artists.
With kind regards,

Peter

I can't believe how cool this is! I've played it several times already, and got my kid sister completely hooked. I think we, as musicians, have a tendency to take music a little too seriously, and forget that it can (and should?) be fun too!

I think the guy is quite the artist, and not just in music.

Because of this I started to check out some of his other video's and I although I don't like all the music there I think some video's are plain out brilliant.

Take for example: Korea M/V (link).

The "one camera shot" technique is IMO awesomely performed. Sure; it could all be fake and it could all be edited and glued together later. Something tells me its not.

Also note that I'm not revealing "spoilers" perse since at a later time it becomes more clear.

It consists of massively long "1 camera" shots. Now, if you'll look closely you'll see people running near the edges of the screen as soon as he well passed the second "gate". The same people which you'll then see appear later on in the second "section".

And this process repeats itself several times it seems.

Again: it could be a trick, it could be faked. But I get the impression this is a brilliant executed technique to give the impression of a huge crowd (it is large) while you're actually using the same cast over and over.

It tries its best (does a good job too) to keep your attention in the middle and glimpses to left and right would first think its all part of the video.

I think it's plain out brilliant.
With kind regards,

Peter

there's a lot of people there that's for sure..
kinda reminds me of this true 1 shot clip :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJKythlXAIY

the 1st clip was funny as heck.. well produced.. attention to details..

I really don't like the over-editing in these clips...
also the 2nd clip.. some very very very bad shots.. no sense of shadows etc.
some stuff doesn't stick.. there's no staying power... while the song and vocalist are peaking (near the end) ...
you see some folks just not really into him walking on the side..
also there's a guy with a stills cam visible in the shot..
amateur town...

highly unlikely that the 2 clips were directed by the same guy..
