Live + Maschine a good idea?

Post by kevwestbeats » Fri Aug 17, 2012 8:15 pm

i am indifferent on it I am very interested in machine but i know i would likely use it as a drum machine which is fine. I don't care much about its sampling capabilities or sequencing but I am interested in having something like a real drum machine. I am curious though to anyone who uses this combo how do you like it?

When you say use it as a drum machine, do you mean, for hitting pads? Or playing patterns? It is great at both. Best pads on the market. Quite flexible for midi mapping via your computer. Completely useless without a computer to accompany it. But really, I love mine. And aside from being a beast within Ableton, it is really fun to use standalone (openin the program in computer without a host daw).

To be honest, as a Maschine owner, just buy an Akai MPD32 and use drumrack and sampler to turn Ableton into your own more powerful version of Maschine with a much better editor/sequencer. ( Machine only addresses one core of a multicore processor so it maxes out far too easily )

Since I bought my APC 40 as Maschine couldn't really do what I wanted it to do live and I've bounced out everything I created on Maschine, it's just sitting there gathering dust.

I mean the sounds on Maschine are great, and it's great as a standalone drum machine and simple ideas pad, but it's a pain in the arse to edit and sequence after going back to it from Ableton or Logic Pro.

Edit: I will say that I've not really gotten into using Maschine inside Ableton, but that would only be for pulling up Maschine's drum kits if I did,

I think of it like a drum sampler. Sample/load and go I'd only use it in Live as a plug in. Drum racks are easy to use offer a ton of flexibility but for some reason don't help my inspiration process when writing music. None of lives instruments do but I love it as a sequencer. Well instrument racks are fun but the only Live instruments I consistently use are drum racks and instrument racks. Maschine just seems interesting to me. I am debating between it and Nexus but only have 1 usb slot open on my laptop so for me its one or the other. How do they compliment each other?

I'd be using Maschine for pulling up drum kits and playing them. I am not really into drum racks. It works and is really flexible just not inspiring to me I guess. Great module though.

you should try contacting SaintJoe... @ soundsandgear.com (there is a forum there)... he is ableton live user and maschine user... he more than likely can give you the "real" lowdown about maschine and ableton...

Also consider FXpansion's Geist. It may not be obvious at first how these compare but I sold my Maschine once I got into Geist.

things Geist can do Maschine can't:

Drag and drop midi with automation
Layer drums on the same pad - instead of linking/slaving other pads, which you have to do in Maschine
Sample browser management is much better in Geist
Geist also sounds better to my ears for house/techno music

I'm not much of a finger drummer, I'm more of a xoxoxox programmer

But Maschine is pretty dope

He has given me his opinion but from what I can tell he uses Live to overcome Maschine's own shortcomings rather than making Maschine a part of Live.

Giest is cool. I have it and use it from time to time but I hate that it so step sequencer oriented anytime I load a drum loop it gives me a sequence I do not want. Its annoying to delete that sequence just to get going. That and idk it just does not hold my interest either. Sounds like it is a great tool for house/techno but I make hip hop and its workflow doesn't always encourage how I work.

Wrong. You can layer samples on the same pad in Maschine.
