Sending Program Change messages out from Live

Post by greentail » Fri Aug 17, 2012 6:16 am

Hi,

I know that you can send PC messages from playing clips in the session view, but I find this method very frustrating as I want to send out 100s of PC messages, meaning I have to set up 100s of clips in the same channel.

Does anyone know of a VST or anything else for macs that can convert MIDI notes into PC messages? I've been looking for hours and can't find something that can do this. I would even buy Max for Live for this purpose if it is possible.

(for those interested in why I would want to do this, I have an 8 track LP1 looper where there are dozens of features that can be changed via PC messages. It can respond to MIDI notes too, but it stays in time and sounds drastically better with PCs. I write automated MIDI note scores to change looper actions in time with the song, sometimes more than 60 actions per song eg record, play/stop, reverse, select track 2, record, half speed, select track 1, stop, etc and want to send PC messages instead)

All help seriously appreciated
Stuart

There exist MIDI translations programs that can do things like this - I think Bome's is capable of it as is MIDI-OX on Windows, but I have never actually done it myself. What you'd do is send notes out of the track to a virtual MIDI port that's handled by this software, which performs the translation and sends it out another port. It can be a bit awkward but I'm quite sure it does work.

If nothing else, if you were feeling adventurous, I'm sure you could rig this up in Pure Data or Max. M4L is nicely integrated with Live but is rather expensive for just this task.

Hey,

thanks for your answers. I should have mentioned I'm on a mac, I came across Bome and a few others that seem to work for windows but not mac. It seems the only way to do this is to download one of these mod programs. I've never used Max and others similar, could you recommend me the simplest/low cost one? Pure Data looks free so ill have a go on that one first.

Thanks!
Stuart

Also, I have been looking through Max for Live's MIDI device library and can't quite seem to find a device that can change MIDI notes to pcs. Have you used one that can do this?

thankyou thankyou thankyou

yes i`ve used some sucessfully. for example: note2prog
but anyway this is one of the simplest tasks for max. you could write your own in some minutes without being an maxpert

Bome's MIDI Translator is available for OSX.

If you want to have a go at patching this up in PD, Puredata.info is kind of the main place for learning PD. I used to hang out on the mailing lists too which were pretty helpful, I presume they still are.
