Will you pay to renew your soundcloud PRO account?

Post by gjm » Fri Aug 17, 2012 8:56 pm

I was one of the many who took advantage of the free 5 month Soundcloud Pro Promo for Ableton users. For me, basically, the whole Pro Package experience did absolutely nothing. At $250 Euro to buy for a year I find that hideously expensive. Based on the 2 years I have used Soundcloud and the plays and downloads I have I should only being paying for the Lite version.

I see that a few of the people I follow on SC who use Live have the little orange star beside their profile name. You probably got the email recently to think about renewing your Pro package. Will you, or will you drop back down to your previous account version?

If you have any comments about your experience it would be nice to hear them.

As a side note, personally I think SC is missing the mark with their plans. SC kinda stormed on the scene as a great way for people to share their music but have gone stale for me of late. I have been using their new beta site and really can’t stand it. They are wanting to make the experience more social but I find it clunky and well, a turn off... perhaps this should be a new thread. :)

Cheers

I never found out about it, but yeah I don't want to spend that much to try it for a few days.

I just want to see all the charts and graphs that you get and the locator. I think it'd be interesting but I'm not famous enough to get that many hits on mine.

For me that's 310 bucks per year. Sorry Soundcloud. Like a lot of similar things on the internet if it was somewhat reasonably priced I'd do it without thinking about it too much. The bottom line is I'm doing the music thing not as much as I used to. Even 50 bucks a year for the lite version is a little bloated.

I'm not ready to post tracks yet. I activated the PRO on my account because I had to do it by June or something before the offer expired. I might be able to sneak a few tracks in before my Pro time is up. We'll see. But yeah, unlikely to pay to keep it since I'm just not at the point where it would be useful.

EDIT: Also, "Great track! Comment on my stuff!"

I'm also not going to renew the pro account. I have lite and that's enough for me.

Nope, music's a hobby not a job. I'd rather invest in a Machinedrum and get a much higher ROI

I was paying for the Solo package before using the PRO package but when that expires I will drop down to Lite. Ironically, the only reason I will now pay for Lite is that I have a couple of tracks about to hit 100 downloads which is the maximum allowed with the free version of SC. I am actually a bit annoyed about this because I will now be paying $$ to make it possible to give something away for free. Now I know this is a common strategy in many avenues of life but am finding that when I have to contemplate doing it I get a tad pissed.

I originally was looking forward to the increased stats that the PRO package offers but was really disappointed. There really is nothing of value except maybe curiosity. I can’t for the life of me find any useful way to use the information from either who played my tracks or where they were played (its not as if people are beating the doors down to listen to my dribbling). If I remember correctly the Location was the only new bit of info over what the Solo package offered.

Music is my job, sort of. I am a music teacher. Return on Investment is important for me as well. As it relates to my job I am now of the opinion that a SC account is a necessary evil that offers zero ROI. I am actually convinced that it does nothing to support or enhance my profile either on the net or in my local community.

I was once a ‘Soundclouder of the day.’ All that did was attract truck loads of random followings where I am sure someone has communicated the idea that its ok to go through certain SC groups and mass follow for the sake of promo’ing their new track/s.

The new SC Beta is a bit of a fail IMO. Apparently the user base has been asking for a more social experience. Holy crap, why? If you are not a so called pro and are working a day job, washing your laundry, cooking your meals, doing a bit of exercise, making music, using Facebook/Twitter etc, The LAST thing you would need is yet another network that you have to keep an eye on... another 300-500 complete strangers you follow, 95% of which your have followed out of possibility rather than liking their music.

Ahhh... bit of a rant i know. Off to work on a project that uses a lot of wood... :D
