Send MIDI from a drum rack to 3 other drum racks...LOST

Post by Logic8807 » Fri Aug 24, 2012 1:22 am

Okay, I have a drum rack setup to utilize 8 pads...2 have a set of 128 identical snares. 2 have a set of 128 identical kicks. 2 have a set of 128 identical open hats and then 2 pads for 128 for closed hats.

My question is this...How can I set that single drum rack to send the SNARES to a DIFFERENT DRUM RACK specifically for SNARES. Same for KICKS and the closed/open HATS going to their own as well (open/closed hats going to same DR.)

So a single drum rack sending midi to 3 other drum racks...The reason behind this is that I want to be able to play all sounds on my MPD at once while only having to select one track to change drums on but still recording each type of percussion to a different clip.

I hope I explained that well enough.

If i understand correctly, there is no need to have more than one DR to do this. 2 solutions come into mind: the first-and best IMO-is to have just one DR with all the sounds, and 4 midi tracks sending midi to that DR track. These midi tracks should contain a midi effect rack each, where using the key chains you single out the 2 notes pertaining to kicks on the first, those for the snares on the second, and so on. This way you have all the sounds coming from the same DR, but you can record clips for every "group" of midi input notes. The second workaround would be to have this single DR track, and to create 8 audio tracks (or you can group them 2 by 2 to have just 4 group tracks) with their audio input set to the various components of the DR. This is a bit more cluttered, but on the other hand gives you the audio level faders for the group tracks, which is useful if you use an apc or something that automaps to them.
Hope it helps!

Okay, so I can only hear SNARES, KICKS and HATS from their individual racks which is superb but the midi signal still shows in the clip for each instrument. Is there a way around this or should I just accept what I have? I'm just trying to perfect it if at all possible.

I figured it out...I just changed my two snare pads on the MPD26 to output to midi channel 1, my kicks to channel 2 and my hats to channel 3 and set my racks to receive only these channels. Thank you NPC for the tips! I may have to make a tutorial!
