Re: The death of the DJ
a lot of what djs do is just choose records - you pay for their taste - they introduce you to new music and you like what they play and you follow them
just like you might tune into Noel Edmonds but not John Peel - hahahhahahhah
mixing used to be part of it
it isn't any more

Re: The death of the DJ
Yeah, if you judge a dj solely on an ability to match vinyl, and no other factor, you are probably missing the point entirely.
I guess it all comes down to what happens in your head. Your psychology as a listener. If Hitler was on the decks, burning down the house, you'd probably still be pretty sceptical of his intent. Same goes with Paris Hilton. In a perfect world, someone will search for both Paris Hilton and Hitler on google, and wind up reading this thread on the death of superficial hype. Now we can get to the real stuff.

Re: The death of the DJ
fake djs are the ones that have always been fake djs, and real ones have always been the real ones. sometimes i bring up the dj issue from a technical standpoint but from a dj standpoint realistically not much has changed, the people who claim the art of dj skills are obsolete were never operating on the level of the artform in the first place in other words those that say beat juggling is nothing themselves had nothing to offer in that way when beatjuggling was so called something i mean they were never on an artist level at the craft in the first place so the fact that the public is a little more ignorant of the artform is only a reprieve for those fdjs, a time where they don't have to be seen as not on the same level as a real dj.
it kind of reminds me of all those people who claim how untalented rappers our when they can't even understand what a rapper is saying much less
do it……..it's the classic non-issue. The only real issue is the hype surrounding the fdj and a macbook contributes to the dumbing down of the public but just like anything else in life it's really the publics fault for letting themselves be bamboozled and they do suffer for it.

I saw on Max Graham's twitter, that he's actually gonna STOP using live because of this. haha
I think it just promotes more worthless resident DJs at shitty night clubs that DJ and call themselves a DJ because it makes them "coooooooooooool" and not for the art of it. (which the sync button can be very helpful if you're actually skilled)

The DJ is not dead its the DJs that cant mix two disco classics records together with vinyl , heck I know most DJs dont spin disco classics anymore, so as I will

I've been DJing for 15 years now and I can't really see this changing much. If you're going to skimp on learning to properly beatmatch it will show, regardless of what equipment you're using, and there have been cheaper options for doing that than CDJs for years now.
Re: The death of the DJ
Well... if you didn't read, they also involved auto quantize and quantize off... soooo basically it's like, "hey, I'll beat match for you.. you just stand there and look pretty"Mage2k wrote:I've been DJing for 15 years now and I can't really see this changing much. I went and saw Pauly D Live, Free VIP, and ticket, I just had to pay bottle service (which was split with multiple people) Dude just stood there texting not even kidding... he had a pre-mix because I saw two transitions where he touched the filter hahaha
Auto sync is the pre-record... it's like, whats the point of even going there if you're not gonna do YOUR JOB!

Beat matching the end of one track to the beginning of another is one small step above stopping one and starting another.
Beat matching so you can mix and manipulate elements of the tracks to make something more interesting is a skill that also requires knowing your music well. I'm not even talking about beat juggling here.
Anyone who gets on their high horse about fading smoothly between two club tracks on vinyl should step up their game.

Re: The death of the DJ
I recently decided to play my first DJ set with Ableton Live.
For years I have DJ'd at house parties and even a street party, all the time with vinyl. Simple beat matching and cross fade transitions between tunes, hardly touching the EQ! Maybe a few tweaks with the low end to prevent distorted bass but thats it really lol.
Now I feel more empowered and free to experiement with loops and using more than 2 channels as well.
I am going to be the only DJ there playing on a laptop and this is my 1st club set!!! Im shitting myself!
Regarding the DJ is dead statement, as long as the crowd are enjoying themselves then so what?

Re: The death of the DJ
So.......Mr Leger hates the sync button eh?
Someone should ask him if he also runs all that MIDI equipment in his studio without using a master MIDI clock.
Does he really run each piece of MIDI kit on its own tempo and keep them in beat manually?

Nothing wrong with that of course. Sometimes that's all that's needed. As long as you didn't get all arsey about being a "real" DJ.HorusProject wrote: For years I have DJ'd at house parties and even a street party, all the time with vinyl. But not for minimal tech DJs. That style crys out for layering different elements and it can be really good if done right. People who just mix the ends of minimal tracks should be fucking shot.
