Ableton version 8.2.X
MIDI Controller: AKAI MPK Mini
I am using the eight pads on the MPK (assigned as MIDI continuous controllers) to turn on and of various ableton channel mute and solo buttons.
The MPK pads can be configured to either Trigger or Toggle mode. In Trigger mode, the pad lights up while you press it then off when you release. In toggle mode the pad lights up when pressed, stays lit when released, then lights-off when next pressed. This behavior seems logical.
The behaviour I want is for the MPK pads to reflect the state of the mute and solo button states in Ableton. Essentially, I would like to be able to use either momentary "press-release / on-off" activation of the solo/mute buttons OR "toggle on-off" function. In ableton, with the mouse, there is only the option of the latter "toggle" mode of operating. The button reacts upon the mouse-click release.
I am getting some weird behavior with my MPK. It seems that I can use the "toggle" mode for my MPK pads perfectly well will the Ableton mute buttons. They behave as expected. But I cannot get the solo buttons to do the same. With MPK pad CC set to "toggle" mode, I have to press the key twice to get the toggle on/off result. And thus the pad lights do not corrolate with Ableton solo button state. However, when I assign MPK pads CC to "trigger" mode, the solo button in ableton will toggle on-off each time I send the "trigger" via the MPK. The problem is, the light on the MPK goes out once trigger event has been sent - and so to see at a glance whether that solo button is on or off, I have to look at Ableton.
Has anyone else encountered and solved this issue without going down the route of buying/using the novation launch pad?
Thanks for your help in advance,
Alex.
Solo & Mute Button Behaviour Via MIDI Controllers
Re: Solo & Mute Button Behaviour Via MIDI Controllers
Yes it's a common issue
i don't know specifically for the mpk mini as i don't have one, but basically you have to set the buttons to toggle mode AND change their range: while for mute buttons and usual toggle operation the button range is MIN:127 MAX:0 , if i remember correctly for the solo buttons to work the range must be set to MIN:0 MAX:64 - or something like that. If the editor for the mpk doesn't give you the chance of altering the ranges...i don't know!
hope it helps
cheers

Re: Solo & Mute Button Behaviour Via MIDI Controllers
Thanks for the insight. It is good to know it was not just me missing something. Unfortunately, I can't find a way to change the value ranges that the AKAI MINI pads spew out, so guess will have to find another solution. Perhaps I can edit the control surface code or something. Cheers, Alex.
