Panning control just controls volume?

This is weird and I can't figure it out- I was trying to pan a basic audio track and for some reason, panning it to the left just makes it louder, and panning it to the right just makes it quieter until there's no sound at all. I tried opening up a different project and the panning control works like normal, just as it should. So I opened my other project back up, tried panning again, yet it's still just acting like a volume slider. What in the world? Any idea what's going on? Thanks a bunch.

here's my understanding...

I think it's to do with using a mono sound source with the whole signal in the left channel.

if the sound you are using in that track is all in the left channel, then panning left will add more "left" to the sound's contribution to the mix, ie it will get louder. If you pan it right then you are basically turning the pan control towards the part of the stereo signal which has no signal in it anyway... so the sound gradually fades out as you pan. For example, if your source sound is Rewired from Reason, and the input you've chosen is "Channel 1 L" then you'll only be getting a signal in the left channel, nothing in the right channel at all.

That could be one reason...

That makes sense, but my sound is just about the same in both channels.

Yeh, sounds like maybe it's something to do with the sound itself, the pan controls don't have any settings to make them work differently. Must be something with that particular sound file. Try dragging another sound file (one you definitely know is stereo) into the same track and pan it around. You should get normal panning behaviour... Other wise do you have Utility on that track set to phase one side of the signal?

Ok, this is weird. I tried bringing in a different sample that I knew was stereo, and it's acting the same way- panning acts like volume (left loud, right quiet). I opened up the original Live set I used that sample in, and it pans just like it should. So I tried starting a new Live set, brought that sample in, and the pan doesnt work, it just adjusts volume. It's doing this to ANY sample I bring in to a new Live set. However, bringing samples into existing Live sets is no problem. Arrggghh.

I just noticed, the level bars on the track SHOW that it's playing in the correct channel. But I'm not hearing it that way at all. So, I tried rendering it to disk, and the rendered file is CORRECT. Gah!

Oookay, and now, randomly, it works like normal. No idea why. Let's hope it lasts.
