Clicks and Pops and the optimum settings...

Post by mletalien » Wed Sep 19, 2012 5:48 pm

Hello,
I am somewhat new to Ableton Live and have been getting quite a bit of clicks, pops and general interference while trying to record. This happens even when I am just recording one track at a time with less than two other tracks playing back. To cut to the chase, here is my set:
Windows 7 OS
HP Laptop Intel Core i5 CPU @2.40GHz
8.00 GB of RAM
64 Bit OS
I am using the Presonus Audiox 44VSL along with the AKAI APC20 Controller. I am using the Ableton Live Intro that came with the Controller. As far as settings in Ableton Live, I am running at either a 256 buffer or 512; doesn't seem to matter, still have the same issues. I have wireless capabilities off while running Ableton.
I would think with my setup I wouldn't have a problem, especially with the minimal workload I am putting on Ableton. Any suggestions? Thanks much! ML
PS I believe all my drivers are up-to-date, and FYI laptop is less than a year old.

unfortunately there are lots of things that can mess with system latency and cause audio dropouts. the most common culprits are badly written drivers in your system that hog the CPU for too long.

this program can help you find out what part of your system might be causing the problem:

This sorted out my ancient Centrino laptop so it might help you: Try disabling ALL the CPU speedup/slowdown and power saving features in the Windows power settings, and in whatever CPU control panel HP might have supplied.

Basically, you want the CPU running at full speed all the time while you're running Ableton.

I'm running Ableton at 96,000khz, 24 bit at 128 samples with 1.2ms latency and no clicks even at 40ish tracks running multiple vsts on each. Just thought I'd annoy you a little.

thanks guys...and yes, that is annoying!
What kind of computer are you using to get results like that?
On another note, I went to an Ableton workshop in Atlanta last night (put on by Ableton). Very cool, instructor spent a lot of time with Omnisphere, pretty sick simulator!

mines is a i7-3930k, 32 gb RAM, 2 SSD drives with the RME UCX inteface. Cost a bomb but my word is it blazingly quick and super reliable, so far anyways. Roll on 64-bit.
