seriously though I was just stating a fact that I came across that I thought others might find interesting. highest number of youtube likes is a relatively new record and it is very relevant to society today. So many of us are on youtube almost daily, and this is indicative of what a sizeable portion of people in our society 'like.'

As for the song itself, I do enjoy it. It's kinda catchy and with the video included, its very entertaining. I too have probably a greater respect than most users here for pop music (though not really in the past couple years), and it may just be that PSY is following the formula, but it worked anyway. Who really cares in the end what everyone else listens to, I'd rather just listen to anything and everything that I like.

Cool you like pop music like me but unsure when you said not in the last couple years. I celebrate Katy Perry and Ke$ha's entire catalog. It's a marathon of hooks and production greatness. First Gaga album had some solid tracks but after that.....crap.

But do you know who held the previous youtube like record? I doubt it and I doubt most people do. The masses just latched on to Gangnam Style and everything about it it is suddenly newsworthy.

I don't really understand what you have against this post. LMFAO held the previous record with the song that you posted earlier. Another indication of society's state. I don't know about you but I think Gangnam Style is a much better song than Party Rocking.

here's a couple news sources that deemed it worthy of writing about:

I wanted to hate this guy with all my might, I truly did.

But, I gotta say, the fucker is entertaining as hell to watch.

He should have been the Asian guy in The Hangover.

Say what you will about PSY, but you have to admit, the guy has conviction, and has it in spades. That's something that you cannot fake.

^ yeah, but it's kinda sad to see what the morals down the drain bling bling posturing music is doing to the world. there's some serious dumbing down going on. by far America's most despicable export IMO. still, dude has heart, i agree.

The Lounge doesn't have to be about music... but having said that, when was the last time you browsed Link Your Music for URLs to other threads?

Well personally I like most of LMFAO's catalog better than the PSY track.

I don't have a problem with you posting this thread or think its inappropriate. It seems you have a problem having a discussion about the topic. It's like you just wanted to post a factoid and leave it at that.

But as the OP you aren't obligated to have a discussion about it either. You're perfectly free to post something and just let other people comment or discuss. It's all good.

Once every year or two there is a song that becomes hugely popular that I just don’t get why it polarizes the masses. It’s no reflection on the production or the artist personally or musically. To me this is the Korean Ricky Martin’s Living La Vida Loca set to techno music.

From the gushing about the video on the first page I fully expected to be blown away visually. There’s nothing to be blown away by. It’s a dude doing goofy dancing in different locations. Hardly original or worth getting fixated on over and over.

The message behind the music? LMFAO is 2 albums deep into this kind of message set to far better music.

To play the race card, if this song was released by an American in English the reaction would range from unnoticed to laughable. We just love goofy music when it comes from other countries.

But if it makes people happy, that’s cool. Just sayin’.

I never look at YouTube links but in your case I needed to make an exception.

Fucking hilarious. 400K+ views.

The best part is the cold sore on the dudes face.

lol no it is a parody. On music videos from the West and the general direction of pop music over the last decade.
It also turns out to be a rather subversive satire as well:

"Over the past four decades, Gangnam has become an iconic place to Korean people, representing wealth, status, and luxurious life. PSY’s “Gangnam Style” is a satire about the Gangnam life itself which is nothing but materialistic and about people who are chasing rainbows, dreaming of becoming a Gangnam resident someday. If you had googled the phrase ????? (“Gangnam Style”) before the release of his song, you would have seen so many questions asking “What the heck is Gangnam style.” (Now you’ll get results almost all about the song.) As Gangnam earned the enviable reputation "overnight" (compared to Korea's 5000-year-old history) as the best place to live not because it offers rich heritage, sophistication, or cultural legacy, people don't really know exactly what they are longing for even in the midst of longing for the “Gangnam style.” And here, PSY is being sarcastic about the idea of "Gangnam style" that is not actually tangible, just like the “Emperor's New Clothes”."

"So, the song is a comic satire about people who bluff, pretending to be rich and trendy. "Oppan Gangnam style" can literally translate to "I'm a Gangnam style," in which "oppa" is a Korean referring expression used by females to refer to older males such as older male friends or older brothers. However, the narrator in the song refers to himself in the third person. He keeps saying he lives or loves a Gangnam style life, but in reality, he's far from it."

I'll say it again @beats me because you don't seem to understand. I posted a 'factoid' about the most liked video on youtube.
You want to have a discussion about the quality of the song and all that; my intention with the post was not to glorify the song or the video (even though
I am a fan), but to make light of the fact that GANGNAM STYLE IS THE MOST LIKED VIDEO ON YOUTUBE IN THE WORLD. The discussion that follows this information can go wherever the forum pleases, but I would think that if one were to stay true to the OP the conversation would be about the social and cultural significance of a k-pop video becoming the most liked video ever in a matter of weeks.
If you want to discuss the quality of pop music being made today, that is a different post.

And as far as the message behind the music, read the post above this. Research what PSY's goal was. Its poking fun at the region called Gangnam and about wealthy ppl in general and all that.
