iPhone5
Re: iPhone5
Apple have been going down a slippery slope before Jobs had died. The company ethos has been wrong for a little while now and its only just starting to hit the hardcore fanboys.

Examples please. And you can't include the term "open source" or any variation of that.Sage wrote:Apple have been going down a slippery slope before Jobs had died. The company ethos has been wrong for a little while now and its only just starting to hit the hardcore fanboys.
Re: iPhone5
The message I'm getting from this thread is that there is nothing very interesting to be said about the iPhone 5.

I believe there's a bunch of people from a certain other company nodding eagerly at that sentiment...beats me wrote:
They also kind of set themselves up for “meh” reviews with their clockwork-like yearly refreshes, but if they didn’t stick to that then the public would expect something insanely otherworldly as a reason for the delay.
Re: iPhone5
Initially, I was determined to make iPhone 5 my next phone; the 3GS has served me well, but it's getting seriously sluggish, and the new camera is absolutely tempting.
But I have a growing sense of disdain for Apple. It's like everything they do is a gigantic "fuck you for ever buying or depending on anything that isn't Apple." The new connector: fuck you for buying third party hardware for your phone, and also a big fuck you to the manufacturers of such products. The new maps app: one gigantic 'fuck you' to everyone – "Oh, boo-hooo; you ended up in the river instead of the street you wanted? It's CLOSE ENOUGH, crybaby!"
But the real killer, the biggest 'fuck you' of them all, is this: having been happy with your iDevice for a while, you probably spent quite a bit in the App Store, buying third party products. All that money will be completely wasted the day you decide to jump ship and go to the competition.
"In your face!"

So I was hanging with some bros last night and busted out my phone to enter some contact info. One of the bros went “Whoa. Is that the new iPhone? Can I see it?”
Here’s the kicker. HE WORKS AT APPLE. I guess the icloud team doesn’t get out of their cave much. I had more information about why Apple made their own maps app than he did, and I felt like a SUPER DOUCHE FANBOY after I realized it.
Also when entering that contact info I had to reboot the phone because of the failed SIM, which happens at least once a day.

People just expect perfection right out the of box from Apple on every new hardware and software release. I don’t think any other company is held up to that standard. The myth is they’ve achieved that frequently when they haven’t. Just about everything has been released with some early flaws, it’s just not flawless to the point that makes it near useless.
Re: iPhone5
^ that's because every other hardware manufacturer doesn't prance around on stage prattling on about their new products that are essentially a slightly refined version of the last one. they just release them and save the big press events for when they introduce something that is actually a new product.
if you buy your way into a walled garden that protects you from what the rest of the world is doing with your only migration path as ALL OUT
then you should expect perfection. they only make one phone. even the shit companies have more than one model. Apple only have one phone because theoretically it's the only phone you should need... OK, then that bitch best be perfect
is the response. this should not come as a surprise.
ooh ahh look we made a new iPhone.. line up to buy it but don't expect us to test the shit out of it first. just buy it. and fuck your maps!

What are you talking about? Other tech companies hold media events. It’s just that most people don’t give a shit and for that reason they aren’t going to hold one when they release a slightly different product every 2 weeks.
But I get what you’re saying. Apple is a master marketer (at least with Jobs at the helm), but if something they release isn’t perfection on day one that doesn’t mean they just slapped lipstick on a pig.
How you liking your iMac?
Re: iPhone5
it's pretty fucking cool.beats me wrote:How you liking your iMac?
i don't like that some simple things are a pain in the ass for me right now... for instance, a word is misspelled and i have to figure out what keyboard mouse combination i have to use to get the spelling choices. lame. not a time saver (yet).
another one... the wifi acts like a little bitch after coming out of sleep mode. i even have MAC filtering on my router with a dedicated IP just for my toy by Apple and it still gets stuck on stupid.
also WTF is up with the way book marks work? so far i've managed to get my bank account to show up as a link/button in safari... all other attempts have proven fruitless... admittedly i haven't sat there trying to work it out for vast amounts of time, but one would think it should be fairly obvious.
other weird shit... the guitar tuner (which is fucking cool BTW) and lessons in garage band (piano) when maximized take up the full screen and there is no obvious way out. fortunately the alt tab trick that i use all day in Windows works on the Mac too so i can bail that way.
i guess what i'm saying is that you have to know the keyboard in order to do a lot of things, and that is cool as i'm a keyboard shortcut kinda guy, but there seems to be no alternate route sometimes and i think it's kinda lame to expect a user, especially a new user to "just work"
you can only have one finder open so how do you drag something from one folder to another from within finder? i found this out while trying to install reverb addon thingys (the word escapes me right now) from my Waves installation disc to the sub folder for the Waves IR-L reverb install location.
lastly... when i installed Live the installer was not what i'm used to. i had used a Mac before, but never installed anything... so i dragged the Live folder into Applications rather than the Live logo... so now i have both (because i updated Live online) and i have no idea what will happen if i delete the Live 8.0.1 folder out of applications section in finder... or if i should. i think my NI Battery installation has both the logo/shortcut and the folder too. is that the way it should be?

For spelling corrections just right click the word and the options appear in the dropdown menu.
As far as multiple finder windows, I vaguely remember Apple doing some things by default in Lion in the name of “elegant simplicity” that pissed me off, like the drive no longer appearing on the desktop and the finder window no longer displaying available drive space at the bottom of the finder window. I fixed both those with help from a Google search. Not in front of my Mac but I believe you can open multiple finder windows, just not be default. I’m pretty sure mine is setup to do that and a Google search probably showed me how too.
Most of the other stuff you mentioned I don’t really mess with, not exactly a power user or keyboard shortcut guy. I probably should be.
So did you install Windows? Are you only using it when you absolutely have to?
