Ableton and Reason via rewire automation

Post by david.barker » Wed Sep 26, 2012 9:40 am

Hi there :D

Been looking into using Live via Rewire to Reason, and got everything set up ok,sound wise.

Question I would like to ask, is this;

Can I automate Reason devices within Live, via the Rewire system?

I have had a look and cannot seen to figure this out,or is it not possible?

I know that midi is sent to and from both DAWs and that Live via Rewire can pick up Reasons audio

Any help would be appreciated

thanks :D

Hi, this video helps:

you automate Reason from live within the midi clip

This midi clip is on an External Instrument channel so watch this and you'll be right :)

Reason doesn't send Midi officially but there is a painful workaround...

Also, if you have MAX for Live, there is a cool device that lets you program 8 parameters from Reason to control realtime from live rather than having to use clips

Care to share a link to that Max4Live device? I'm very interested.

sure:

http://www.maxforlive.com/library/device.php?id=54

All you need to do is get the midi CC mapping from Reason and you can save one of these per Reason Device

It follows your Ext Instr. plug in on the midi chain - Also cool for midi control of hardware synths / samplers etc :)

Thanks very much Fratts :D
I have had a look at Neds tutorial, and had a play with the envelopes. And was keen on seeing on Reason combinator rotary controls worked by automating them ,via the clips within Live, and it looks all good :D
Im still a newcomer to Live ,welll since November last year and dont have Max for Live,I got plenty to be getting on and learning about,he,he :D

No problem, it's a really powerful combination :)

The Max for live device allows you to actually say map those 8 combinator rotaries to a midi controller or any 8 controls of any of the Reason devices which made it a worthwhile purchase

But yeah, you can still automate within clips as long as you remember what's going on and label stuff properly.

I'd also recommend you re-sample the effected clips in Live to Audio to make it easier and cleaner for arranging...

Thanks Fratts :D

A nice idea using Max for Live, but having recently upgraded to the Suite ,I cannot that afford it at the moment

But as Im a demon for labels and organizing my tracks, that won't be an issue,he,he

But looking into re sampling as you suggested. In fact I had a test run a while back, but without automation.I will group my tracks together from Reason,to conserve precious real estate.

Thanks again for your help
