Hi!
I will perform on stage with LIVE, 4 brass players and 2 voices.
It´s intended as a music-comedy-show. Only the voices need mics.
My question:
Is it practical to mix the voices into LIVE and use its compressor and reverb and a lot of other effects?
My wish is to omit a mixer.
Will any version works?
a) motu 828
b) presonus firestation
c) Rme multiface with 2 channelstrips
d) new firewire 410 m-audio
The firewire 410 m-audio doesnt have balanced outputs.
So no chance on stage????
Is this realizable or the mixer on stage the only way?
Monitoring on stage????
Should work
Hi Erwin,
It is alway's good to take a "small" mixer with you when you go out.
And yes, you can do this without a mixer.
The point is, it's best to use balanced-input and balanced-output when you are (using long cables) on stage.
Second, plugging mics into a line-input won't work, so you need some mic-inputs/preamps, maybe use the mic-preamps from a small mixer or use a good audio-interface with a mic-input.
Make a test-setup at home, and make sure it works error free.
General point of attention when you go on-stage, make sure you get reliable power with no peaks or noise. 110 or 230 Volt, depends where on Earth you are.
Do always a check with a multimeter before you connect your laptop to the mains.
Peace,
f

Thanks for answering!
I know that´s not possible to connect a mic with line-in.
All my suggestions implement some preamp-solution.
But generelly some of these setups will work.
That´s fine.
Is it usefuel to have a small mixer on the main out?
Because of more analog output?
Can you recommend any of the audio-interfaces I suggested?

small mixer/monitor/controler: EZBus
I've got an Event EZBus, http://www.event1.com It's a 2ch USB I/O, 12tk Digital Mixer, MIDI control surface and is quite versitle, not the smallest thing around, but also not the most expensive.. similar to the Tascam 842 i think. anyway, I recommend it, it can control live (via MIDI) and prep 24bit audio for a number of uses, allow you to monitor whatever and route (as a mixer) any in to any out.

I just picked up an ezbus this week and I have had nothing but good times with this unit. I am still trying to figure out all the controll surface settings for live but overall I am very impressed! I am using mac os 10.2.1, g4 tibook, and firewire drive. Its very nice to finally have a solid OSx system!
Hey fugu,
I was wondering... what settings did you changes to be able to use the ezbus faders in live? I am able to use play/stop commands but I am unable to assign the faders to live faders? I have not needed to read the ezbus manual yet and so far it has been easy to figure out... Also I am using one of the default analog mixes so maybe that could be my problem as well...
let me know if you have a chance.
Thanks.

it's 'ez'.... =P
systek,
you need to enter the 'virtual' control area by pressing the 'audio/virtual' button underneath the 'system' button. this will make the input->pan/assign buttons each become the virtual maps numbered 1-8 (and 4 pages deep using prev/next buttons), event has some presets in there, and you can create your own with the profile editor (windoze only application). the simplest way to get rolling into Live control is to enter 'virtual surface mode' and then in Live, enter midi controller assign mode and start clicking on things you want the EZBus to control, when you move any of the midi controllers Live will reflect that controller/note in a text overlay within the control you clicked on in live. .
