Live & M-Aiduo 1814

As some of you may know, M-Audio 1814 comes with Ableton Live lite... I was wondering if Live is a true multi -track recorder. I can assign it to records tracks 1 & 2 simutaniuosly ( I hope I spelled that right) however there is no option to record all 8 at the same time. Can someone please point me in the right direction. I have read the manual and done a search, to no avail. Please help!

welcome to Live, and the 1814!

When I started through the same path I had Live delta 2. THe solution to your question wasn't any more obvious back then, but the solution is still just as easy (though sometimes awkward):

Hold down the control or command (apple) key when you arm the second track. You will now have control of each of them.

Now you can do this to all of them.

You know what I think the really, really fun next step is?:

create several audio tracks (you can base this off of midi out too) and name them sends using control/command E, and typing in, and then send either a recorded instrument or midi commands teach of those channels. then put different effect on each, or create subgroups with similiar sends. Whoilah! Your weekend is over!

Sorry, should have been more specific...

I am Runing WIndows XP,

and in the "audio from" drop down, I choose ext... and then in the second drop down, it only gives me input 1 or 2, not 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. Also what driver type should I choose M-Audio FW ASIO or M-Audio FW DX. Thanks for the quick response!

I emailed ableton when i bought my PC (I had been running on an old mac) I was having trouble getting my MOTU 828 working correctly with Live. One of the things they said was to use the firewire asio and not the DX. So i would suggest the asio driver.

Got it...

You have to choose:
ASIO Driver

Then choose:
ASIO Direct X Full Duplex Driver

Then choose:
Hardware Setup

Then Choose:
All of your needed inputs and outputs, and de-select the default Windows/Mac Drivers

Then choose:
Input config & output config & choose the appropriate inputs and Outputs

And then you are good to go

*DON'T* use the DirectX driver. You'll get horrible latency. Use the M-Audio FW ASIO driver. Should be listed in the same pulldown menu.

If you are using a PC use control instead of command.

Also, and this is "KEY"

GO to the live menu
select preferences
go to the audio tab on top and select it
go to near the bottom of this menu and press the channel select tab
now unselect the green stereo selection on the right column, and select for
each of your channels (there should be 8 on the left)

Now you should be able to select your interface from the below the ext-in tab on the session view.

I hope this helps. I have had difficulties with m-audio's drivers before, but if you are getting sound then drivers should not be the case.

I think what is going on is that Live has just preselceted that your two, pre-amped line-in's as one studio pair. Start out by following the steps I gave you to break those two lines into individual channels, and then continue down this subset of the Live preference list to activate and engage the remaining 6.
