problem for new user (very inexperienced)

hey there. have just installed driver for audiophile usb and am using live llite 4. have started the tutorials provided with live's software but cannot hear myself play live (even in demo mode) - i can only hear what i have played in playback. using a mac osx system. when i go to system preferences, then sound, if i select m audio in output, it tells me the selected device has no output controls, input seems to be fine (has controls). what am i doing wrong?
