1. you record some midi (in either view).
2. you lay in some envelopes..
3. the loop is looping.
4. play in more notes.
5. your envelopes are gone now.

Current solution in version 8:
"if there are envelopes on a track in this section,
don't record or overdub midi there anymore. Set a new track's output to the first
track and play your new notes in there. But.. you can't edit them both at the same time,
and you cannot merge the two regions together either.
I'm not missing something here, it's just really is unnatural.

(totally dug the brothers johnson song btw, lol)

Oh I just remembered there is a new button for recording envelopes now. ahh...

But what if you overdub record midi into an area that has envelopes, are they erased?

cheers! I'm nothing to do with Ableton so I don't have Live 9 yet, so not sure how it's gonna work in that.

Anyway, I thought of a solution to your problem. Drag the midi clip back to Session and record the extra notes, then drag it back and reactivate the automation. It works!

You arm the track, you record the notes and as soon as the loop repeats itself the envelopes disappear unless you immediately unarm the track from recording. And from that point on, you cannot do overdub records on that track because arming the track just flat out erases all your envelopes. it is ridiculous and upsetting.
im sorry but do you actually
play your notes into the sequencer when you're creating a song?
if i was gonna drag the clip back into clips view just to do a simple overdub, i might as well open the piano roll and tick the notes in with the mouse. lol.
your answer does work but its a bit ridiculous lol.
i doubt im the only person that gets fkd up when all the envelopes disappear as he records midi lol.

but again, it might be fixed in version 9.

I too would like to know how on earth are many serious users here composing with this awkward restriction.

Hello everybody
i got the same problem with my midi automation
maybe is a midi routing sync problem that you solve using the thru midi port if you need to return back
in to your midi hardware synced
in your ableton midi sync preference remote.
and for iac bus remote chose or in or out.
works very fine for me now.
cheers

hey, yeah that's a bit frustrating. I tried it and I figured a workaround:
1. Load your synth on one MIDI track
2. Create a new midi track
3. Send the midi out of second midi track to the first one with the instrument
4. Set the midi track with the instrument in monitoring mode (the orange button IN)
5. You can now record midi on the second track, and overdub; and you can draw your envelopes on the first track, and they won't get affected when you overdub

Hope that helps and it's clear, if itsnt i can make some screenshots later today, no time atm
cheers

I'm not sure if I 100% understand your problem but here's something...

In Live 9 I just created a midi clip, put some notes in, drew in a bunch of clip envelopes, then recorded some more midi notes into the clip, and it didn't touch my clip envelopes at all.
