You can find me on a few forums/sites (monome, mooig, flickr) as 'artpunk' - it is really bloody hard keeping up this complex fake identity whilst heading up Ableton inc. I really am getting quite exhausted!

really? i just took a cursory look at the official upgrade prices for the current versions of Protools, Cubase, and DP. are you just making shit up or what?

and do NI sell a DAW, if not why use them as an example?
Sonar Studio upgrade from any version: $149
Presonus Studio 1 Pro upgrade: $149
Reason (from any version) $169
Sonar Producer (from any previous): $199
Cubase upgrade from 4/5 $199
Abelton reg to suite boxed: $309 OOPS, sorry mistake, now it's $469
DP from previous version: $199

So, yes, the only other program matching Ableton's $300 for suite 8 download (with 25% discount, then back to the NEW $399 price) is Pro Tools. But without that $25 percent off, congratulations. We have the high cost winner.

EDIT re: NI:

You asked who else invested in building an integrated controller. Well, NI did, brilliantly I might add, and its becoming more like a DAW. You can make full tracks in it, even master them.
haha. and how is it fair to compare the upgrade from standard to Suite??? my upgrade price from Suite 8 + M4L to Suite 9 is USD234, and Ableton have indicated that they will offer a better deal closer to launch.

and the truth is that all those linear DAWS have a lot more competition than Live, since they are all more or less built on the same multitracker paradigm.

re: NI, i asked which DAW makers have invested in making integrated controllers.

Oh I miss the early Ableton days, 2.1 forward. Each upgrade showed up about one year later, about same nice upgrade price, good quality, lots of new features. Ableton took care of us. A little bit similar like the NI Komplete upgrades. Life was good. Until Live 8.

It's indeed easier to figure out the price of a sofa at Ikea than the current fluctuating Ableton pricing system. Maybe Ableton marketing should take a field trip to Ikea.

And Ikea has some very lecker meatballs...
IMO marketing, market guys, and sales management, fire them.
I love ableton. But they wasted mine and the actual company´s time, and it is not the first time. Instead of going to watergate (not even to Berghain) and get hammered with 18 year old kids do your job. The new site is crap and looks more like a magazine for teens and their pop idles. The pricing policy is confusing, and I do not want to pay more because these kids need to get wasted on the weekend.
Said this and said that upgrading is a free choice, I wonder why I should spend 250 € for a product which (allow me) I have some trust problems with (the infinite 8 release, and blablabla).
How on Earth am I to trust a software when the company which programs it continues to make these kind of mistakes ? And the more the mistake is stupid the worse it gets. I wonder how the engineering department must feel when someone sh*ts on the work they did for years like this.
Allow me as a customer, as one who works in the biz, to say "hey boys and girls, I really did not like this". And it is not even for the price, I am willing to pay money for the Max6 upgrade so why not for Abe. Well the answer is that I use Max since 2002, and every upgrade or new version has been a UPGRADE.
Allowing MIDI automation in session view should have come for free in 2012. GB of sounds are available everywhere.
What about video? What about multiple rendering options? I will stop here.
I do not care if one bought his first synth when he or she were 2 or 3 years old. I have 20 years experience too, and am a happy Abe user, even with 8. Mainly because of m4l, I admit it. But the good name of Ableton was the attitude, the ex- Berlin cool way, something which IMO they lost, Abe and Berlin.
Allow me to add my 2 cents, I really wonder about timing, since up to now timing between m4l and Live has been an issue, and I read nothing about this, I wonder if they actually did something on this side of the barricade.

For the rest, you can do what you want to do, it is your choice.

sorry for the morning runt, jacopo (Jabbone) .

Some historic pricing to ponder:

Live 6 to Live 7 - €99
Live 7 to Live 8 - €149
Live 7 to Suite 8 - €259 (this was the price I was offered, with some sort of discount included for already owning two instruments)

Some users received a €30 coupon during the initial 7 to 8 upgrade period. It seems that a similar introductory discount will be offered again this time around, but whether that will be in the form of a coupon or more/less than €30 remains to be seen. A similar offer would mean that the 8 to 9 upgrade cost would actually be a little cheaper than 7 to 8 was, even with the coupon.

Anyway, the point is that we don't know what the final upgrade prices will be. It probably would have been a better idea to put 'Price TBC'.

Yeah - they should have taken that part of the site down.

Because it was saying "this is your cheapest upgrade" path and not "price tbc"

PR disaster.

To people complaining about the long amount of time between 8 and 9, keep in mind that they've had to rewrite the entire program for 64bit and they've created an entirely new hardware controller, two pretty massive tasks. I personally have faith that once 9 is released, Ableton will go back to its ~yearly upgrade schedule.

Also: I want Push now, dammit! Why couldn't they manage a christmas release?!

You never know actually if they had rewritten the entire program. It could be that only [a few] interfacing libraries had to be patched, so we likely never know for sure.

Kind regards,

I'm very frustrated about the new price. May users have bought it for 179€ but now I must pay 254€. I have all the weekend the product in my cart and yesterday when I made my login : price change.

Today I have contacted the support and they said if your product is in your cart in our system you can get the price but by mischance they said : Oh no we have no product in the product !

Sry but I'm very unhappy about your new prices and how you treat already users of Live 8.

If they don't change it , many people don't upgrade
