Will Max4Live in Live 9 be completely integrated?

Post by moreofmorris » Mon Oct 29, 2012 9:58 am

I just wondering if anyone could answer this.

When I last messed with M4L in Live, you had to have Max open in the background as a separate application to then run M4L in Live. I wonder if Live 9 will have M4L completely integrated? As in, I can just load and edit Max patches without it opening a new application in the background?

I suppose it's not a deal breaker, but was curious if the integration was seamless for this? Obviously Live 9 isn't out yet so maybe no one knows, but maybe someone from Ableton or a maybe a beta test can help answer this?

Thanks :)

The videos seemed to show it looking very similar to live 8 m4l.

I think I read somewhere on the Abe website (I forget where exactly) that you'll still need Max running in the background but it'll open quicker and be more efficient. So, no it's not fully integrated but it'll be partially integrated more efficiently.

Hmm... If it turns out that you have to run Max in addition, I'll be kind of bummed out, because they leave Suite users no way of opting out of M4L. So, if it's not completely integrated, not only are you paying extra because M4L is mandatory in Suite; you also need to install and run a second app. That's not cool.

And many just want MFL and have to pay extra for the suite that they don't want. Sigh. I'm not interested in 20Gb of orchestral samples. Just MFL. If nothing else squeeze it into the base Live setup.

Max for Live in Live 8 does not require you to launch Max separately -- it launches automatically the first time you try to use an instrument or effect that requires it.

Just to clarify, Max does need to be installed in order to run Max For Live.

Now whether you *open* Max separately depends on what "running Max For Live" means for you. If you're just using devices and never editing them, then you never have to open Max, but it does need to be installed on the drive. If you're editing devices then you will be using the separate application Max as the editor (it launches automatically when you click the Edit button on a M4L device).

I see... So just using the new Convolution Reverb or Robert Hanke's Granulator (two that interest me the most) I can just load them up and play. I don't why I'm concerned so much, but that feeling of opening up a two year old set (for example) and another program then loads and opens in the background, just to open your song - just seems - well, not very integrated.

I'm more interested in the devices the community provides, seen some great stuff. I doubt (for the time being) I will be doing much editing of the devices.

If you just open and play a song that contains M4L devices, Max will not load and open in the background.
It only happens if you want to edit the devices.

M4L devices are like plugins. So depending on the number and complexity it may take some time to load them.

Ah, that seems to cement which one I am getting, should I decide to upgrade next year. I do not own Max in any form nor used/have it in Live 8. So if I read correctly it is required that you have MAX in order to use M4L, am I correct? If so then I am just going to upgrade to Standard and use existing instruments reloaded into Live 9 that I have from Suite 8 already. I will just miss out on some of the other stuff I guess.
