Microphone Question??
Microphone Question??
Hi all,
I had such a good response from my previous post regarding what headphones I should buy I thought I'd as another question as I'm in the process of setting up my home studio and also require a decent mic as well. I can spend up to $400 aus and have currently looked at either a Rhode NT1 or 2...
Any suggestions??

Re: Microphone Question??
Sorry rygen - can I hitch a ride on your thread - I'm in the same boat looking for one or two decent mikes to record vocal & guitar/piano...ryggen wrote:Hi all,

Except my budget is about half of the yours...
- does anyone here have any experience feedback on MXL mics? I was looking at either a V67i or 550/551r combination...

Re: Microphone Question??
I have a Rhode NT 1. No complaints at all, it's a great mic.
Another one worth checking out is the AKG Perception 220.

Re: Microphone Question??
No experience with MXL mics, but have with Rode NT2s.
They are solid and fairly robust mics, that do an fair job as an all-round condensor.
You will need a sound card that has phantom power (of course)... and will get better results with them when plugged into it's own dedicated pre-amp, as opposed to just your sound cards mic pres.
for a cheapish alternative... there is a guy in adelaide who sources and sells no-name brand mics Not sure if he's still doing it, but they seem like a good option if you're after something a little different, that are cheap.

Re: Microphone Question??
I am NOT a mic pro!
I have the Rode NT2a and I've never had a problem with it's sound. The different pickup patterns work very well with isolating exactly where I want the sound coming from and doesn't pick up room noise (I live in a noisy apartment with noisy neighbors). It sounds clear and warm (I also have an audio card with really nice mic pre amps... my old card didn't make my mic sound as nice and creamy). There have been times when someone else hit play while the vocal was solo'ed and if I wasn't looking, I couldn't tell if it was the recording or the person in the room practicing (I also have really good monitors and a room tuner)
I'm happy with the NT2a and have no desire to go mic shopping.

Re: Microphone Question??
I am no mic expert either, but a great budget mic the Audio Technica AT2035. It sounds great as a drum overhead and good on electric cabs, especially paired with a 57. I initially didn't like it on vocals, but after playing with mic placement, I've found a spot I really like with it! It has a pretty neutral sound, maybe a slight low end roll off, which I like. There's also a built in PAD and hi-pass filter.
I know it is neither of the mics you mentioned, but from my little experience, this mic has done well for my needs.

Re: Microphone Question??
No worries Art punk you can hijack my posts anytime!! Sounds like the Rhodes are good mics and I have a friend with the same opinion
I think you can get a Rhode NT1 on Amazon for about $240 which is an awesome deal and the NT2's are about $300.. I'm off to get one.. cheers all and keep making tunes
Re: Microphone Question??
Thanks rygen, much appreciated. The Rode mics look pretty good, as do the AKG's mentioned. Obviously I will need to do some more research I think. Hey are you an Aussie too? Where are you based?

Re: Microphone Question??
I did a bit of a google search last night and found this interesting thread on gearslutz comparing the Rodes NT1A and the MXL V67g
The MXL mike gets a good wrap (and it looks sexy!)

Re: Microphone Question??
If you can stretch to an AKG C214, you'll have yourself an excellent "workhorse" that works well with literally any source. The only issue I can think of with some of the microphones already mentioned is that some may be tailored for vocals (as an example) and may not work well with other sources as the frequency response is tailored for vox. I did find the Rode NT1a to be like that and equivalent SE microphones in that price range, no experience with MXL, so can't comment.
Re: Microphone Question??
I'm am looking for a mic that is mainly for recording vocals so maybe the Rhodes would be good for me??

Re: Microphone Question??
if you want a good workhorse mic, you could do worse than the cad m179. it's a pretty much neutral mic, which means it's not going to flatter your source like some mics would, but that it's going to sound decent on just about whatever you throw at it. can handle high SPLs, has a variable pickup pattern from omni to hypercardioid, sound great, and you can get them for $139. is a condensor so you do need phantom power.
