Windows and Mac OS X compatibility

Post by Fishji » Sun Nov 11, 2012 4:38 pm

Hey there

I usually work with ableton on a PC, and now I'm considering buying a new laptop (macbook).
Now I've heard that in some cases, the compatibility between Windows and Mac OS X isn't always very good,
but I've no idea what it's like with music softwares.

Can I work on a project file on both systems the same time without any problems?
(My main consider is that I bought Sylenth1 and Massive (for windows), and I don't know if that version will still
be working on a macbook.)

So have any of you guys who run on both systems experienced any issues between Windows and Mac OS X compatibility?

edit: awful mistake, thanks Pamp! ;)

Hello,

Mac OS X isn't iOS. iOS is for iPhone, iPod touch and iPads. Mac OS X is for Mac computers, and Live runs on Mac OS X.

I compose with a friend: I use a MacBook and he uses a PC. There is no big problems for sharing projects on the two OS. Just be sure that you don't use special characters in the file names of the samples. If you use vst plugins that are available on the two OS, it will be fine.

Pamp.

Sylenth and Massive both have Mac OS X versions, so compatibility wont be an issue. Please be aware that most (if not all) issues come from using platform-specific plug-ins.
Mac Studio M2 Max and MacBook Pro M4

Genelec M030; Live 12 latest and beta; macOS 27 Golden Gate
UAD Apollo Twin

Ableton Push 2

Just for my information: is it possible to download for free both versions (Windows and Mac OS X) of Sylenth and Massive when you have bought one version?

Use vst versions of Mac pluggins. Projects will transfer across keeping all the sounds the same. If you use AUs on the Mac, it won't recognise the instrument is the same. Many companies allow you to have the programs installed on two computers, whether Mac or pc. You should be able to find out on their websites.

Just one little question to get this right, are 3rd party plug-ins on windows always VST, and to choose between
VST and AU is only on a Mac?

BTW: Looked it up, both programs(Sylenth1, Massive...and probably also most of the others) are allowed to be used on more than one computer. (And yeah..as mentioned now also on different systems, thanks again! :) )
