Selecting VST Plugin Path = Crash in Live 2.03

Post by dss » Fri Apr 11, 2003 9:30 am

Well, Live 2.03 seems to be working nicely in every respect apart from one: Choosing the VST Plugin path (live's native folder with no effects in it, or the VST PLugins folder working just fine in Logic Audio) causes the application to freeze.

upon reboot: the app begins to load, and gives a message warning that A. the application wasn't closed correclty, and B. the plug ins were not loaded correctly.

then the application freezes.

only workaroud so far has been to trash prefs and start again: no vst plugins path selected this time

System:
Mac OS 9.2.2
G4 867
Live 2.03

I assume that you have a VST Plugin folder inside of the Live folder with some VST plugins included. When you select the VST Path, the plugins are scanned and due to a compability issue, a plugin crashes Live.

Unfortunatly we can't provide full compability with all plugins because the VST standard gives no information about how a host (in this case Live) should work.

You should figure out which plugin causes the problem by removing or adding Plugins from your VST folder consecutively. Normally Live should tell you which plugin crashed and instruct you to remove this plugin from the VST folder the next time you start up after the crash. Doesn't this happen to you?

We are working hard on improoving our host implementation.

Good to hear some feedback, thank you.

i have done the removal of plugs one by one to see which plugs are causing the crash, and on my system Live 2.03 will not tolerate a single vst plugin. not one.

merely choosing the path causes the freeze.

Strange, and possibly interesting to note:
i have not changed my vst plugins between version 1.5 and 2.0
this folder of plugins operates exactly as expected in version 1.5, but causes a freeze and a crash in version 2.03

heres to getting it working correctly!

:)

This is really unusual. Can you please delete the Preferences.cfg file in the Preferences folder before you try with a plain folder again? Please also check your hard disk with First Aid or something similar.

i trashed the prefs [again] and launched live.
i also threw away my copy of 1.5.2

i am now able to select the vst plugin path.

however i am not able to install any vst plugins without crashing.

Live Crashes When Loading VST Plugins

Wavelab has similar problems where certain plugs cause it to crash on startup, they incorporated a "plugins to ignore" text file. This would be a really easy fix for this problem.

Trick

Hello,

Don't delete plugin file (*.dll) just rename all of them like this xxx.dll to xxx.old

Then after, rename one by one to the right name xxx.dll

So you can find step by step wich vst dll is badly supported.

Regards.

Pierre.

similar problem

i have a similar problem. all vst-effects worked fine in live 2.0.3, until i completely erased my hd and set up everything from scratch. now, live detects only one or two plugins, although all other hosts work just fine with all of them. i freshly installed live for several times and it keeps on detecting different vst-plugins everytime. (usually only the ones that come with installer)
very very strange, ain't it?

system:
powerbook g4/500
osx 10.2.6

any suggestions?

Same problem here. along time ago i installed Cubasis. so this is were my VST folder remains to date. ive since installed Cubase 5, Logic, Acid, Wavelab etc.... all of which i have sucessfully linked to my original Cubasis Vst folder. Live 2.0.1 will not allow me. it just crashes just as in his first post, same message and all. and because ive got so many other programs running off this VST folder i dont want to alter it or it could mess up every thing. but this is a definite problem.

Hi Felice, Hi guest,

Felice:
- I'm not sure if I understand your posting right. Did you have tried to delete the preferences.cfg file?
- Is Live really detecting always different plugs for each start or is it decting always the same plugs but not all that you have installed?
- Do you use Live under the same user account where you installed the plugs too?

If you still use Live 2.0.1 you should firstly get the latest Live 2.0.3 version from the download section of our website.

When Live scans the selected VST folder and a crash happens it will normally remember of the the "crashed" plug and ignore it next time.

I agree that is feels like time wasting to find a possible "bad" plug. Maybe it's a good idea to log the name of a plug into Live's log file before the it's scanned. This would be a a good help for us to find out where Live has problems with plugs (or plugs with Live). I don't know why I haven't had this idea much earlier...

But firstly you should really get version 2.0.3.

Alex

and to further inform ableton of my issues:

i went through and trashed all the plugs and reinstalled them from the disks...

same errors...

so via the one by one effort:

Zroom is no good and there is no update (trashed.)
PSP Lexicon Delay was a problem, but there is an update (updated.)

now, all is well.

nothing else was causing problems.
