NI Vintage Comps - 50% Sale

Post by MrNicHoe » Fri Nov 16, 2012 9:07 am

Hello Guys,

Native Instruments have a sale of 50% on their Vintage Compressors atm:
http://www.native-instruments.com/#/de/ ... dium=email

What do you think? Is it a good thing? I only use the ableton comp and the iZoptope Alloy 2 Comp.
They sound awesome indeed but are there better ones?
Just share me your opinions, thanks :)

Greetings!

i fell victim of the marketing gag and I bought them yesterday

i LOVE them

been trying lot of freeware compressors but was missing some comp with a solid character until i tried the VC bundle.
not extensively tested yet but first impressions are very very good.
They can be really subtle or nasty, the 160 thing does wonderful things to the lowend, can't wait to extensively test them in the studio tomorrow.

How do they compare to the Waves version?

I also thougth it would be worth to buy them.

But I wanted to try it first.
So I downloaded the demo software to try it first - but when I put it in any channel I have a wrong timing with delays on every channel in the project. But when I switch it off = No delays, no un-timing.

Is that just an issue with the demo or a general issue?

Soundwise I think they would be really well invested money ( especially for master-busses) - but with the delay-issue weren't able to test it really, without solo-in a channel...

Any ideas about the delay?

i did a quick test, no delay.
not sure i understand your delay problem
but i tried the following
create a track with a kick
dubplicate it
one channel w/compressor (tried all 3) and one without
played them simultaneously and no flam or flanger was there, both channels were playing with the same timing.
let me know if that's not what you mean.

I tried your test-environment - no problem, no delays or anything.

But when I try them on a real track with several channels and busses I have this issue.

f.e. I put one on the bass-Bus and another on the Kick/Drum-Bus.
then the Mid-Bus (without any compressor) seems 1/8 ahead of the other both busses.

it seems as with compressors on the busses, these busses are 1/8 to late.
Not a flanger or chorus delay - a real "to late" delay :-)

and another issue I've seen: when I choose the presets direct on the GUI of the compressors: no problem.
When I choose the presets on the Ableton-Effect-GUI: nothing happens. The words change - but not the switches on the compressor itself...

that's the first time I have such issues with a demo.

Any idea how to resolve?

Just for information: I just installed the vst files.

And beside that: after playing around for 2 hours with them: it really makes fun to play with these compressors - and it sounds good.

just realised: if I insert on each Bus-Channel one of the compressors of this package, than there is no delay... I think because then all channels are a little bit "too late".

For better understanding of the problem: if there is just one compressor inserted in any channel, it sounds like an offbeat track.

Are you sure there is an actual delay, or are you just hearing a delay because you expect one? You said yourself when you tried the test environment (2 identicle tracks one with and one without the compressor) there was no delay...

manestra: i dont think i'll get around to make more test today, but I'll try and report.

after some more playing with it i'm very happy that these comp are nice with the lowend, even at pretty extreme settings.

cheers

Yes, im sure. Because when I remove them, there are no delay, no offbeat!

In the test environment i had none of these issue.
Is it possible that it has to do with the processor load?

In the test environment I tested it with 5 channels and 1 bus, just loaded with these comps.

In a normal project i have way more processor load...

I think it really depends on what you want. If you want some colored compressors then at this price point it is probably worth it if you want something clean with a ton of options then stick to the stock stuff. I don't think better or worse is relevant here its about variety. Many will say that all software compressors sound the same. I however will not.
