Classic. So we have both been discussing something that we will never be able to resolve. My thinking is that max for live is a bit like a specialised version of rewire. Max 5 is what we both got initially. You have bought max 6 and as a consequence now use max 6s editor and object library. I am currently using max 5, when I get live suite 9 i will be given a download of max 6 with a special licence code, just like the one i got when I bought max 5 for live, which allowed me to download a special version of max 5 which could only open via Live. If I just bought Live 9 standard, my expectation is that I wouldn't be getting a licence code to use on cycling 74's website to allow me to download the crippleware version of max 6 that only runs in Live.
Are you an owner of the full max 5 who then purchased the max for live crossgrade, then upgraded to max 6? I started using max with Max for Live. The reason I have engaged with this is because I think you are giving people false expectations of what is going to happen with their max for Live licences when they upgrade to Live 9 std. i would be really hacked off if I upgraded to live 9 standard with the expectation of being able to access max 6's objects only to discover I was still using max 5. Edit: i don't understand why you think being able to use max 6 in live 8 has relevance to what people with a max for live licence that allowed them to download max for live 5 from c74 will able to do when Live 9 comes out. What do you think you are proving with that statement. Even typing it is convoluted.

Tldr: Max for Live isn't like operator. If you don't upgrade to max6 for live then you won't be able to use max 6 functionality or any of the new max patches in suite 9. Live Suite 9 includes the upgrade to max 6 for live. These restrictions on functionality happen because the max for live licence gives you the right to download a special version of Max from the C74 website. If you don't buy Suite but want to use max 6 then you will need to either buy max 6 or some currently unspecified max 6 for live upgrade. This purchase will give you the licence to download a version of max 6.

Yes, you are on rock solid ground.

But seriously, your position has no supporting evidence nor any precedent. Mine does. Ableton sell M4L just like they sell all of their other instruments, as "add-ons" that are actually code inherent to Live that is unlocked when you submit the proper license code. There is no evidence that the fact that M4L will be "based on Max 6" is going to compel Ableton to charge current license holders an upgrade. They charge for the code that is M4L, not for the use of Max as the editor and object library. If anyone were charging for that it would be Cycling '74, but they're not. Whatever money they're making from that end is between them and Ableton.

I think we can all agree that it would be nice if David could lend a hand with all the questions people have had in numerous Max For Live threads about the upgrade.

I agree that your concern is absolutely valid: the whole Live 9 announcement has been surrounded by vague wording and lacklustre communication from the Abes. We still don't know what the upgrade price will be for previous owners of Suite and/or M4L. The info on the Ableton website gives you the impression that Live 9 is the currently available version, and all in all, I think the whole announcement has been a complete and utter clusterfuck.
