From previous Buyers...

Post by Stolenlogic » Sun Nov 18, 2012 6:09 am

I have 2 questions for people who upgraded from live 7 to 8. I am going to buy live 9 when it is released, and I have looked at the differences in the packages, but what, for you as a producer, made you either get the Suite (Most sounds, instruments, etc.)
or the standard version. I want every possibility, so I am thinking of just biting the bullet any buying the 749 one.
What is 300$ better on the suite version that i don't get with the standard, from your personal buying experiences.

I don't need thousands of personally uninteresting presets & samples or AAS plugins, so I didn't have an itch to get Suite. And I can't get to like Sampler UI's 'tabbing for everything' concept. So far, I'm very satisfied with my decision.

i got a bit lucky with my upgrade pricing so i managed to save a couple hundred bucks but essentially i went from standard to suite because of sampler, drum racks, and a few more libraries.
if you're looking to keep everything ableton-streamlined then it might be worth it to get suite but if you already have/are looking at other synths and whatever then it might not be best way to go.

the only thing i kind of wish i had from suite (aside from the synths i guess) is the amp and cabinet plugins

but i guess i don't miss them too much

I initially got the standard Live 8, then I got Operator and loved it and thought a lot (I know how sad) about Sampler and looked at the videos and thought "yeah - like Simpler but better" and then I looked at the price of Sampler versus Suite upgrade and about getting Analog thrown in and various people here advised to get Suite.

But to be honest I haven't used Analog in any productions and I could have got by easily with Kontakt (which I already owned).

Sampler is really no better than Simpler - especially so if you own another soft sampler.

The much vaunted Sampler workflow is a facile argument.

I used Corpus which is cool and Operator is really really awesome but the rest - nah.

My advice - get regular Live 8 with Operator and another soft sampler such as Kontakt.

This is what I would probably do if I was starting again from scratch....

I love having suite, I do use all instruments. Don't use the loops/clips so much.

I probably could do without the extra-instruments, using other vst-synths instead.

But there are a couple of M4L-devices that make me happy and that I would hate to miss, although I can't program max.
Generally it's lots of fun to browse maxforlive.com and check out devices.

Do you get m4l with Suite?

Maybe I forgot about that....

I do use m4l but not so much in anger now - browsing for weird devices and the lfos and knobs and stuff give you extra options.

I didn't buy Suite because the included instruments don't fit into my workflow, and because I'm satisfied with my current sample library.

I got Suite 7 for $250 off of some guy online, so it was a no brainer for me. I upgraded to Live 8 Suite because there was a big sale.

I couldn't live without Operator and Drum Racks. They're usually the backbone of anything I do. I like having options, but also limiting myself to what's inside my DAW. So Suite works out well for that. I don't feel like I'm going to run out of options any time soon.

I am going to upgrade from live8 standar to suite 9 because of:

1.- Max for live: sequencers, midi fx, synths, audio fx, integration with controllers.

2.- Operator

3.- Orchestral Instrument collection.- yes it is limited and kind of low end but it sound good enough and it's integration in live suits my workflow.
