I am currently trying to enhance Ableton live by going online and downloading sounds and effects. I am confused as to what kind of stuff I can get for Ableton. I am going to list what I know so far if you know any other please add them or just let me know if I go them all down.
Samples-These are audio files or any other audio sound that I can load into Ableton
Live packs-This I am a little confused on what live packs are and do
Ableton racks-I am not sure what these are either. Are their different kind of racks like ones that play sound and ones that are effects only?
Presets-I hear this a lot and I am not sure what they are exactly. Can you download presets from people and use them as sounds or to create new sounds?
VSTS- This I understand as third party plugins
I am not sure if there are more if there are please let me know and if you do not mind give a brief description of what each one does exactly.

Re: Types of sounds
Live packs-a full ableton set with sounds, racks etc. all bundled (.alp)
Ableton racks-a single, or chain of native Live built-in instruments or fx or any combo thereof
Presets- settings file for Live instruments or fx (or third party too)

Re: Types of sounds
Well in fact there are only three ways to get more sounds: samples, presets or vst synth's.
Samples come in threee forms
a) As audio files of single hits (drums mostly), this can be used in Live in drum racks or with simple or sampler as clips.
b) As multisample instruments, instruments which have been recorded so they can be played in the daw world as an instruments, the acoustic intruments included in Live are like this. There are third party vst's that use multisampling as Kontakt by NI.
c) As loops, an audio file that contains more than one instrument, it can be taken from a song recording. This can be used in live as clips or with sampler or simpler too.
Presets are a set of settings for a synthetizer that produce a specific sound, you can find them for Live synth's (operator, analog, tension, collision, electric) or for thrid parties vst's. When you program a sound in a synth you save it as a preset or "patch". Multisampled instruments can also have presets.
In the case of Live presets also take the form of racks, you can see there are presets for operator and analog that only use the main synth and others which use additional fx. There are also FX racks, and drum racks that simply put together synths, samples and effects with particular settings. Racks as far as I know are unique to live in the way you can recall that group of instruments and fx anytime as a preset.
Finally Vst's for third partys can be Synth's, samplers or FX. There are many kind of synths outhere from third parties, some free, some chea, some very expensive.
As for Live
Live packs can be:
a) A library of multisampled instruments: EIC, drum machines, retro synths, etc Anything you find in the "packs" section of the webpage. This packs can also contain "demo songs" or construction kits.
b) A project by an artist that contains presets, samples, clips and even an arregement with automations.
In which way you want to "expand" depends on what you need,
more presets for live synths? look for artists packs, racks, and around the web tehre are some free.
maybe more acoustic instruments? look in to what is ofered in live store, if not look for other feerings like Kontakt, or east west.
Live's synths dont satisfy you? maybe look for third party ones: alchemy, omnisphere, zebra2, massive, diva, etc, many many outhere.
Looking for loops to build upon? take a look at libraries at loopmasters or sample magic
