I believe there is external instrument which you have to set up manually for some instruments but I haven't touched on that yet. I should look into that because I want to be able to use my Korg M50 as a synthesizer as well as MIDI controller. What do you mean "direct monitor it" vs Lives external instrument configuration?

it means you can only direct monitor through your soundcard not through the software.. so no hardware delay compensation like the external instrument plugin in ableton .. it's wierd because they have an outboard effect plugin called pipeline which gives delay compensation .. just not one for instruments.. just found out cubase has just announced v7 i think my money will be going there instead

The "Project Page" feature looks pretty cool. One way I think it would be useful is if you're doing an album with a lot of interludes, or going for a seamless/continuous mix kind of effect from track to track. I'm considering this for my own album, but taking all my master tracks to a new Ableton project to make sure everything is properly synched up should do the trick.

I was a little tempted by 50% off deal (it's always fun to spend money I don't have). But yeah, I think I have everything I need. There's so many tools and features I've yet to tap into and learn to use in Ableton that it would be stupid for me to start using another DAW at this point.

I mean - 9 looks nice, but thinking its not worth 120 for an upgrade - there really isnt a standout editing feature for me.

I think prioritising Ableton for song creation and then moving it to Studio One for mixing is a work flow Id really enjoy. Who knows, I might buy 9 in a couple months if theres a feature that will improve the creation aspect.
No need to jump ship. You'll find one does something better than the other.

I meant jump ship as in from my potential buy of Live 9 to Studio One. The feature set and organisation of Studio One is exactly what I need to move my projects (and mixing skills) forward. But they are all projects that are and will continue to be, largely started in Live.

Youre right, Im not abandoning Live, Im not ever going to sell it. It's still my primary song/music creation software. I know it inside out and how to get results quickly. But I was continually bumping my head against workflow limitations in Lives arr view, and losing out on the enjoyable aspect of using session view.

If anything - with the new workflow with Live/S1, I can get more out of Live and start using session view alot more. I can maximise it for its creation potential. Then, separate that from the whole process of mixing.

Im not saying I wouldnt buy Live 9 in a couple months, but if I do - it wont be to buy a one stop shop for all mixing/editing needs, which is originally what I was hoping Live 9 would be. And it was easier to use a combination of both.

I was getting so frustrated with simple things, and maybe expecting something from Live which it isnt suited to. Which is unfair, its extremely good at what it does, and session view should always be the priority, as thats Live's ISP.

Studio One 2.5 is going to offer a couple new buss recording benefits - if anything, itll make the link between Live and Studio One stronger, and even more fluid.

Theres obviously a period of time to adjust, and create a new workflow that feels easy (as, you have to learn to use another DAW). I have owned Logic - which on release was very unstable. I knew how to use it, but like alot of things, the feature set was huge, but not all that nice a workflow. I had continual crashes, really random things. I could say the stress Logic caused me broke even with the feature set in the end. Just about. :?

For me it was the other way around so to speak, I use Studio One as my primary DAW and thought one day a while back that since I got a copy of Ableton live with my audiocard I would register it and got the latest version of Live Lite 8 and thought why didn't I do this sooner, It's easier to form a song together now than it was before given the nature of how things are done in Live.

Even with my feature limited version of Live Lite 8 it compliments Studio One perfectly IMHO.

The one thing that I like and have yet to try (running 32 bit because it has to be for rewiring) so I could rewire Live into S1V2 which gives us the best of both worlds. 255 page manual printed out double-sided color (nice new work printers!) to peruse. Picked up one of the 2 S1 books (just came out like 2 wks ago) for beginners and I skipped through to like page 30 before anything became relevant to me.
