Help on pitching a hardstyle kick.

Post by VicesLikeVipers » Mon Nov 19, 2012 8:43 pm

Ok, I just got a Akai APC20 about a month and half ago, and I have been trying to make dubstyle and hardstyle for the last few weeks. I have a kick I made in ableton that I like, and I have been trying to pitch it using the drum tuning feature on the drum rack. But every time I pitch it, it never comes out the pitch I quite want, or sounds like I want it. I want to like Headhunterz does his kind of.

Also I've the synth over the kick I've been trying to get to sound kind of like that.
But I can't get to pulse like most hardstyle artist. I've tried side chaining a compressor, and all that. but it is always a little late.

Also another question I have is, how can I get my kick to trigger a a synth? that is a probably I have had when trying to make dubstyle, since the kick triggers the wobble. Like obsidias Drops of Water.

I will try and post up some of the stuff I have done so far later in the week.

Thanks,
Daniel. :)

In hardstyle they call it Pitching when the kick changes pitch in the song.
Like in this song, around 3:18

and this one at 1:17

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1-7zdqWeyA

I made the kick with the effects in this order, 909 long kick, Drum Squash, metal Click, Compressor (threshold at 28. I don.t remember what the knee and other stuff was set to), and Screamer at the end, with another compressor. I don't remember what I set the threshold to on this one, but it isn't as insane as the first one.

And thank you for pointing me to your website, it has some useful stuff on there. I'm going to go mess around more with sidechaining and see if I can get it working how I want it to.

I'm pretty set when it comes to letting instruments have space in frequency ranges. I learned that a long time ago when I started playing electric guitar hahaha, it was a pain in the butt getting a tone I liked and that cut through the mix at the same time hahaha.

Thank you for all your help so far, I really appreciate it a lot.

RE second question you can drop a synth directly onto a drum pad. It will be pitched however according to the pad pitch so you I usually end up detuning the oscillators.
If you want both the sampled kick and the synth kick off the same pad, drop an empty instrument rack onto the drum pad then drop your kick sample and the synth into chains in the instrument rack.

I've tried dropping stuff on to empty drum pads, but for some reason it won't let me. I'm not sure if I'm able to do that or not in akai APC edition or not?

but the good news is, I've been finally making better progress on it. I got a ton of VSTs,so that has helped me a lot.

couldn't load the YT - damn You ISP.

pitching any sound is quite easy I guess. If You use simpler (or sampler) You may draw a clip automation for the pitching, if it is synthetized (the best for it is operator) then just adjust osc freq/coarse.
the most unpredictable way is to put Frequency shifter with LFO - no more however than 10-20Hz or You loose the 1st harmonic of the sound.

Yeah I read a lot more on hardstyle kicks, and watched a lot of videos lately, and most producers have like 5 layers on the kick. so I've been trying to do that, so now my problem is making a good kick synth.

I'lll also give the high pass filter a go, and see what I can come up with.
I also probably need to work more on layering sounds.

another thing that has been kicking my butt is making a good sounding supersaw synth. But I'm getting better at that, I just downloaded some free VSTs that work pretty well.
I'm a little to poor at the moment to buy some nice VSTs like Reaktor, and stuff hahaha.

But the kick synth has been the hardest part for me now.

Alright, I will give that a try. I almost have a good kick synth using Image-Line's Sakura, the only thing stopping it is I can't get rid of this reverb I keep hearing.
I also made a great one using Karnage. I need to mess around with it some more though before it is right. I think I need to tweek the LFO, and oscillators a bit.

Check this Here is a great tutorial on how to Pitch Hardstyle kick using free plugin Kontakt 5 Player
You must first make a kick, bounce to audio then you pitch a tail of the kick, and the punch stays on the same note.
