Re: The Hobbit?
Nope. I refuse to see any movie longer than 2 hours in a theater and I thought the majority of the LOTR trilogy was a snoozefest.
On the last one I got out of my seat 5 times thinking it was over ....but it kept going.

Re: The Hobbit?
The Lord of The Rings is about 1100 pages if I remember.
They stretched it out to 3 films. And they dragged on a bit.
The Hobbit is about 300 pages. And they are making 3 films from that. The first one covers the first 6 chapters...
I tried and failed to get into the book on numerous occasions in my life, but always fell asleep during the first 4 chapters of Dwarves interminably singing around Bilbo's friggin' table.
I eventually pushed on through and got to the exciting Dragon/ City Under Siege stuff, but there will be none of that in this first instalment.
Just lots of Dwarves singing. And some trolls in the last half hour.

Re: The Hobbit?
I'll wait for the directors cut. By cut, of course I mean every last second of footage filmed.
Apparently the audio book is 11 hours. Since reading out loud is always slower, I recon about 8 hours to read the book. Less than than the total running time when it's finished. So wrong.

Re: The Hobbit?
the scenes with the Ents blow any old 80's sci fi flick to the winds.

Re: The Hobbit?
The Two Towers is the best of the three, and the Ents are a big reason for this.
Even better than the Ents are the Arwen/Aragorn backstory scenes - with Howard Shore's beautiful score, these are in my opinion the most poetic aspect of the series.

It was AWESOME... but then again we are die hard Tolkien fans. Playing time was not long at all, flew by. Saw the 3D option. Couple of bits were not played out well enough for my liking, but over all a solid 4 out of 5 stars from me. It is definitely not as dark as the LOTR, but the Hobbit was not a dark book anyway.

Re: The Hobbit?
I just remember how fucking awful and drawn out Peter Jackson's King Kong was..
omfg.
That fucking thing was never going to end. I remember sitting in the theater and thinking about halfway thru how wonderful it would be to stick my thumb deep up my nostril and see if I could slowly pick my brain out and nibble a bit.
Can't wait for the Hobbit.

Enough with the dinosaurs already!
But Andy Serkis was brilliant as usual.
As a big Tolkein fan I will no doubt see the Hobbit but I'll probably be annoyed as fuck by it. At least there is not that much of a plot for PJ to screw around with this time but three films is stretching my good will a bit far.
In LOTR the plot started to go off the rails when they missed out the Old Forest and Fog on The Barrow Downs. I would have happily swapped a good chunk from the interminable ending of the last film in exchange for some Tom Bombadil and Barrow Wight action.

Re: The Hobbit?
In the credits I noticed that Andy Serkis was the 2nd set director. I liked Martin Freeman as Bilbo.

Re: The Hobbit?
Is there a king of Godwin's Law for LOTR discussions that predicts the inevitability of a 'they should never have left out Tom Bombadil' remark?
My view - at least we were spared the 'hey nonny no' interminable finger in the ear pewter tankard singing that lasts for 3 chapters.
This is what I am most dreading about The Hobbit. I really want to see it, but I find that kind of stuff buttock-clenchingly embarrassing.
Is their much of it gjm?
