found out too that alot of the added material came from the appendices of the book and some other unpublished background material that were written by tolkien, so that's pretty much legit

one standout great part to me was the 'riddles in the dark' scene, golum has never been more 'real', and thats where bilbo won me over

+1. There was enough distance from LOTR both in time and hype for me to watch it with pretty much fresh eyes. I saw none of the above mentioned critical technical comments, except for the scene where the dwarfs and Gandalf were escaping from ...... It was just to long and a tad corny. Overall though, for me, there was enough story mixed with scene setting for not only the Hobbit, but back story for LOTR to make it a good watch.

Its not so much your blind but that you havent seen.

i did actually notice a few of the things, like gandalf sliding off the eagle and others, but also was blown away by the realism in some shots, so maybe a bit of uneven-ness could be a legit criticism, for me it was all easily forgiven

You'll sense that there's a bit of padding going on here. Although Tolkien's novel The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, is shorter than any one of the three books that make up Lord of the Rings, it's being turned all by itself into three new movies. So where the challenge in LOTR was to condense and reduce and condense again, the challenge here is to include every syllable, plus an appendix or two to boot.

and people need to remember that it's not an action movie, not a jj abrams avengers episode, the parts people got bored in were probably where characters were talking, revealing motivations, acting, stuff like that?

i look forward to when they ever start filming the silmarilliion, now there are some really epic mythical stories

The plot of the movie is weak. I read the book ten or so years ago, and couldn't remember most of it, so I came to the movie pretty green. Here are my comments:

- 3D cinema is gay. And by gay, I mean it fucks you in the arse, touches kids and gives you AIDS.
- The plot is totally directionless.
- Fuck.

I hope the industry does not push forward with this 48fps bullshit.

FWIW, I've noticed the "soap opera" effect on my new LED TV with any content that was filmed in HD. So shows like the Walking Dead or Dexter look like "movies" on my older HD but they look like you're on a set on my new TV, which sounds exactly like what people are saying about The Hobbit, but on the big screen. What's the deal with that?

I noticed this on HBO HD shows. Thought I was watching a Behind the Scenes for the first 20 minutes.

I have no doubt within a couple years TVs will come with filter plugins that will make the show look like it was filmed in a decade of your choosing.

But why is it happening with shows I've already watched that didn't have that look on an older HDTV?
