When I preview the .wav file in the browser, it's over 6 seconds long. But when I add it to the location where to arrange the tracks, it plays for only 1 second or so! Why can't I make the sample play for all the 6 seconds?

It is being contained within an instrument. That instrument has ADSR settings. R being Release.
One option is to draw/hold the note for a longer period of time.
The other option is to increase the Release so that even after you release the note, the sample continues to play out.

Where is the Release? Could you show me in a screenshot please?

Actually, I am wrong.
I was assuming that you had either been using a Drum Rack, or other Rack with Simpler or Sampler as the instrument.
It looks like you are using Impulse. Impulse has a different way of working with samples. I'm not sure how long it will hold them for. I'm not looking at anything in front of me but if I recall it has a parameter to determine duration of time and a method for how it reacts.
The information on using Impulse or Sampler should be in the manual.
