Hello,
I'm trying to simulate my Kaoss Quad in Live. The Quad is not the same as the Kaoss Pad, though it has exactly the same form factor. It has four groups of effects in series that can be turned on or off with the punch of a button, and then altered with the x-y touch pad. For example, I can turn on grain delay, then add flanger next in series, then a phaser, then reverb. I can then bypass the phaser, and/or the flanger, etc.
My question has to do with the best way to chain the effects in Live. I'm guessing it's an effects racks, probably with nested racks for each effect. Is that the best way to do it, or should I be working with multiple tracks and routing? Will I be running into any latency issues? CPU strain (I'm on a fast MBP)? if I pile up too many effects?
I can handle the mechanics--I've been using Live for a few years. And I'll be mapping to either Lemur in an iPad or a Quneo to simulate the x-y pad. I just thought before I launch into such a project that I'd check and see if I'm going in the right direction. Maybe somebody has already build such a rack and can share it. I'll share my results when I get it to work.
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Most elegant way to simulate Kaoss Quad--effect in series?
I liked the Mapulator part of this vid. Dunno if you'd find it helpful. If you don't have m4l, probably ignore it

Yur2,
Some good ideas in that video, thanks. Gives me some ideas for ways I can map the controllers.
But doesn't answer my original question. I don't have Max 4 Live. What is that Mapulator thing? Is that only M4L, or is it a plugin?

M4L. I don't have it either. Kinda anxious to get my hands on it with Live 9 Suite.
I think the video demonstrates nicely a solution to the limitations of the Racks. Do you believe that if you had that Mapulator device, it would theoretically have solved your problem? If we think about how it brings one closer to the solution, we can better define the necessary ingredients for your cause.

Re: Most elegant way to simulate Kaoss Quad--effect in series?
I've been experimenting with ways to do this Kaoss Quad simulation using racks of chains and chains of racks. I put my effects into a single chain and ganged the control of parameters to one set of macro controls at the head of the chain, which I then map to x/y controllers (on the iPad). I can toggle individual effects on/off from my physical controller.
The only thing I haven't figured out how to do is to freeze the parameters on one effect while maintaining the ganged control on the other effects--which is one of the coolest things about the Kaoss Quad.
QUESTION: Is there a way to toggle on/off the mapping of Macro Controls in the rack or MIDI mapped controls--with another control? Some sort of "defeat" in the macro control line? I've never seen anything like this in Live, but then I'm always discovering new tricks (discovered the sidechain listen trick for rack sends/returns today).
