Find BPM of a song.

Post by Captain Naegeli! » Fri Jan 25, 2013 8:26 am

I have a ton of songs that I've written on guitar but I'm not sure how to figure out the BPM when it comes time to record the track. I don't know how to figure out meter either. I generally just assume its 4/4 and try to figure out the BPM but there's got to be a better way. Any thoughts or advice?

Use a metronome, tap your foot and count, play along to the click in Live, load a drum loop and play to that...

There are various BPM counting software utils and apps for iDevices that you could use.

Or you could record the song (in any audio editing s/w) then import it to Live and let Live work out the BPM.

Mixmeister BPM Analyzer 1.0 (freeware)
drag and drop your files into it and it starts to analyze!

not the best way for you but maybe for other people

I usually tap my foot while playing but for some odd reason I am horrible at multitasking while playing guitar so I have difficulty counting it out. I cant even talk while playing. I can walk around while playing but as soon as i have to talk I mess up. I have a metronome and play around with that until i get everything to match up but for a few songs its too slow and literally 1 beat faster and its slightly too fast, super easy to adjust tho.
