LIVE 5 great product going BAD!

Post by eastbubblefunk » Fri Jul 22, 2005 1:09 pm

The big problem i see now if i recall my past experiences with this product.
Is you have to wonder? do they really use the product they make? (intensively)
Live the software that we all know and come to love - do they at all ?
i mean why is it so many friggin bugs? i think they should test the program
exclusively first and then ready it for forum beta testing afterwards
because all this fixing bug on line and thru a forum running hype sucks!
Live is a good program no doubt but i think the powers that be behind the
company are making some mistakes.

Live 4 was still buggy and it still is crashing every so often once in while.
i think the only other piece of software i actual own that crash by its self is
native instruments reaktor... out of the many software i own.

i never had reason by props crash on me -> and i never had tracktion crash on me
i never had intakt crash.... and i can go on with this list but back to the point.

i'am a heavy user. (hooked on official software patches to update bugs) . usually i can accept a program crashing here or there like in abletons Live for example the extream use of external pluggins fighting for cpu processing.

BUT for a program to crash all on its own not playing no audio -> by only just zooming in at a max resolution??? this is enough to push somebody of a cliff..

It has been said on the board by some people -> They feel it is to early for Ableton to say release canididate now.... But i think this staement is right and they need to not rush it and slow down especially if they are asking for more money for live5??? i mean really? This is crazy right.

The product concept is hot everyone likes it and use it... If the program is unstable and not running solid over and over again release after release? Who got time to keep waiting for the next update? just to be creative? because the more i seem
to dig into live i come across another bug screwing with me and my computer which
make the program always crash - asking me do i want to recover my work?

No i don't want my work recovered because it will crash again i need this program
to work for me solid and some what consistant and stable to some degree of functionality..

Then another thing that i dont like is that i believe they(Ableton) must have a fairly
medium to large size of people interanally and externally... they are what i call "Family Hype Members" Because they are Co-signing the program providing also all sorts of crazy amped up! Feedback in the beta forum like they are real customers?
and heavy users??? and if you look at they're joined date like mine they are fairly new?

Also in the beta forum board you can find some occasional bandwagon jumpers here and there... Dont let my join date fool you!!. Soon as you post somethin people be coming back at you - to chop you up! giving you the classic " duhhh " and like " who are you" !!! " what?" What did you say!!?....... hmmm dissapointing

They cant be serious what is the point of beta testing something and providing feedback if everyone is not a professional beta tester all you get is a slap in the back of the neck!

i am sure they have some real users among them and please dont take this the wrong way but i'am a professional user when i spend my money on something and it dont work correctly what else can i do but be screwed?

i remember live when it was young and i watched it for a while before i decided to cop it... When i did i really wanted to use it more you know what i mean?? like as a main piece.. (centralizing things in my studio operations) recently i been asking myself tho do these guys test the software among themselves??? what is the point of blowing up this beta board again???

LIVE 5 is even a greater idea made better!!!! (there i said it! ) but if the program is unstable and always being updated every other week or month? what good is that? and what is the point of rushing things and asking people for more money in the progress? what about the previous problem with live before live5?? what are we suppose to do be passified that ....ohhhh wow? Live5 is about to come out..

i see this as a bad habit about ableton! If they do it right the first time correct it will be paramount. Since like version 3 of live thru 4 and now 5 i see the same things happening again and agian... it is getting frustrating
and i dont want to loose faith in this company and its product..
but bump that this has been going on for how long now???

Maybe live need to look into designing some proprietary hardware just for there
software to run solid.... i have not tried live in protools?? i been trying to research
that like is live going to use my TDM power or is it still taping from the computer resources only???? But now in this day and age protools is not all that it use to be and not exactly necessary all the time anymore..

i mean like look, hell! i will even pay 1,000 bucks for live if it ran rock solid!
For example nuendo runs pretty well... if abelton have to ask for more money
to get things right?? i can respect that because i understand the nature of the beast also there is nothing else like live, and this is what makes it a good program to use being creative....

But all this nickle and diming? Everytime i turn around like this program is rock solid ? its like what's up with that? and what about professional users who are new to beta posting?? like i said - it does not feel good something is itching at me..

i can buy project 5 and or any other piece of soft but to be honet i dont like the way project 5 is laid out - i dont even like the way tracktion is laid out for me live is what floats my boat..

but i long for the day i can use it like propellerheads reason.(pretty much not crashing)..

i believe that day is coming soon i hope but as of right now live5 needs to be pushed back atleast a year...

i think they need to also keep beta testing classified as soon as someone post something anywhere on the board they get a million flying darts thrown at em!! like " shut the blank up "!! Duhhhhh!!! dont post here!!! and i know you are but who am sarcasm and remarks maybe this is the nature of allot of flakey jakes...

Anyway all tho project 5 is pretty stable... i think it sucks to me anything that scores low in originality sucks... it is kinda simular to people stealing samples all over the place mimicking peoples style like a xerox machine all crazy!

am not trying to get ableton and the click mad at me but look i call a spade a spade
a club a club... i just want level of consistant quality established as a consumer, when i buy a product am happy with... i give back i dont keep rising to the top forgeting about how i got there and who help me get there in the process...
So what ableton has a little click? allot of flakey people do!

BUt if ableton step their game up this time with live 5 and if this software is concrete this time around i plan on getting the operator to match.. But i am not going to keeping forking out dollars for things to stay current not being able to really use it..

it is so much hype surrounding live and ableton right now it is ridiculas but i guess it is all good... with all the DJ's (everyoine is a DJ now) and as far as live being used like a music production piece??(the way it is being marketed) ? Come on everyone knows who has an ounce of common sense " it's not what tools you have and how many tools you use - it is how well you use it!....

Live could be easily used as a main piece for anyone who is "able to" (excuse the pun) and think outside of the box..

however with something that is freqently crashing all the time being unstable it is hard to play with the box and be focused! No matter how awesome the software concept is.... even if live has been a best kept secret to someone.

i dont want no drama only results am not mad just communicating some issues
that has been a recent trend here with this product and this company.

You know.. i really..hate the idea and even the thought of using something like cuebase, tracktion, nuendo, protools -- again? oh no..... theres no way i can go back.

i hope ableton is trying to make history with the release of ableton
and what i mean by that is " making ableton rock solid no more crashes "

a program that may have a potential bug is cool and acceptable if the program still works primarily and can still funtion allowing work to still get accomplished but a program that crashes with no other outside plugins in use is horrible..

The thing with this beta board-
i think it is to much going on at the same time with no structure and real focus..
They (ableton) should internally perfect the prgram by their selves first
making sure the program is stable all on its own and then after this they
should proceed to making sure the prgram works with plugins after and
in fact there should have been two prgrams

One that is internal only like props reason..
only using Live internal effect and devices..

and then for more money the version that works with external
plugings...

This would have took ableton to the moon..

but right now as it stands things are all over the place
if anyone take a look at the forum and look at the total post -vs- the topics
and if you read in there you can see how things dont look good
with a majoriy of the post coming from certain people.. (the Hype Family)

its like whoa?? am not jumping off the bridge unless i see more life boats
that will give me a 2 to 1 ratio or higher for every one jumping..

or another scenario would be i'am not going down that road
i been there before.. and i know where it ends - To a bunch of unhappy campers
and i dont wanna be one of them i dont have time to keep up on top of updates staying current every week because something was rushed like crazy.
am getting tired of that.. i wanna create and be focused on that...
with nothing severe getting in the way..

it's like please dont ask me what computer am using it is the best believe that and am a power user my work is serous business.

the closer we get with release candidates the worse my beta seems to be

mp3 glitching and CPU spiking are really killing this for me

i hope that i'm doing something wrong, at least then i'd be confident with the program, as it stands theres no way i can play out with Live 5 - it just doesn't work right

mosca

PS i could mention the impulse bug again, but they know about this now (they just can't fix it before 5 comes out - whats up with that?)

before this thread disolves into 'ableton's great' i think the original poster has some really valid points

there are many of you trying the beta and having no problems at all, thats great. there are some of us who are using the beta and are encountering problems thats not great. i'd rather the problems were ironed out before they release this (just to get an update in a couple weeks).

to paraphrase a british TV ad - live does not do what it says on the tin!

Olaf : PC - and the problems im having (appart from impulse not working correctly) seem to get worse with each step towards release

hmm.. i don't have any glitches and CPU spikes with the b20 beta.... ok let's try and find out what is happening..

what soundcard, soundcard drivers, samplerate and latency-setting do you use?

what is your OS and OS version? Do you have audio glitches and CPU spikes with other audio programs/daws?

what are your computer specs? processor, RAM etc.

Hmm i know what you mean about the bugs. Little annoying ones here and there. I have a feeling they are going to stick with v5 for a bit now though. I see they have introduced that ableton live pack idea. You can see in the prefrences that they are obviosly going to be releasing more add on in future to get their revenue so they can avoid updating the software every 9 months or so. I think people will start to get a bit mad if they continue. So hopefull they can really iron out the bugs in version 5. and get it back to that ultra stable version like they had back in the day.

wow, seems jar-jar binks here has some good points about bugs,
but i think it's killer that live has it's users help create the product.
i know it seems like they may be taking advantage of the consumer,
but i feel it allows for the consumer the ability to help steer the product development.
i personally have never had any software work 100% problem-free,
not reason, pro tools, etc., etc.
i will upgrade to live 5, but if i need to wait a bit while it's ironed out,
no problem here. i can log on this site and thanks to the beta testers
get some real info.
cheers

Have you ever used Cubase !!

I've been a Cubase user for more years than I care to think of, and every release is full of bugs that get ironed out (or not !!) during the lifespan of the release.

What this means is that you are paying top dollar for the product that has been 'officially' tested and released and then effectively acting as 'Beta' testers.

Beta testing is designed to help Ableton find problems with the product on a vast range of different computers. Frankly I am all in favour of that.

Yes there are bugs or glitches. Some of the ones in 5 are irritating.

But remember, the product hasn't yet been launched. Personally I'm quite happy to use the Beta version.

I am extremely impressed with the guys at Ableton. They are approachable and can normally sort your problem directly through the support.

Live is a pretty complicated program and I can't see it ever being completely glitch free. But then what program (non music as well) really is.

Okay, time to go home and load the latest version and probably crash my system :)
