Re: Giving up drugs - it's easy!
This guy I used to go to NA meetings with would often get confronted by some AA visitor who wanted to debate something, usually about alcohol being more abundant, advertised, or special.
One of the funniest things I would here him respond with regularly was
(delivered in full Texas accent)
"I never went down on anyone for a cold beer"
I tell you what, TV and Movies just aren't as entertaining once you've invested some time in meetings.

12steps is for serious (and not so serious) addiction and does what a pop psych book can't. Get honest and dirty with your demons and why you use. And make amends to those you've hurt. Ya need to know "why" you're trying to kill yourself and why you're hurting cool people, right? Lots of addicts are doing just that on a daily basis. Maybe it's just the substances, but much of the time there will be an early memory or trauma at the root of addiction. Many of these perpetrated before our memories began to form making for confusion for many. Certainly 12steps takes well more balls than most people give it. That's why they say you're fucked if you leave, it's because you already said that last time a million fucking times and here we are again. Rock bottom is rock bottom. That may not be you, but that's who that's for and that's what Machinesworking is getting at i think. I can tell he's been there or has close pals in life n death spots. Anyway, It's absolute for a reason. You've joined the army to find your strength cuz you've got nowhere else to go. Regardless, at the end of the day, it's down to the individual. Whatever works is great. But if you've tried everything and you're dying from using, you will be a 12 stepper right quick because that's where the club hangs out and that's the best thing going with AA or NA or CODA or etc. That fellowship keeps many people alive. The 12step rules and faith bullshit don't matter and it doesn't to most 12 steppers. But yes, like anything else, 12steps can be abused and turned around if you're a nutter. Stupid still trumps most things. .. If a meeting you went to sucks, find another meeting. It's the people and not the rules that define it. No two meeting joints or crowds are the same. They all ahve different clicks and vibes. Stay out of church group 12step meetings or where there are lots of republicans. Point being, it works as well or as deep as you have issues. Maybe not for this beverly hills pop psych new age crowd.

For real. I'm an atheist so it didn't bug me but that shit should go. Tho no reason to throw out the baby with the bathwater. There isn't a better fellowship system and that's what makes it go round. Most reasonable people mix and match methods and keep AA as an anchor for friends. You're not bound, it's what you make it and the friends you chose. Nothings for free aye.shadx312 wrote:I'm watching that Russell Brand doc; 15 minutes in, good stuff.

No doubt that's great stuff, it's too bad they have to ruin it with some other terms and conditions.Get honest and dirty with your demons and why you use. And make amends to those you've hurt. Ya need to know "why" you're trying to kill yourself and why you're hurting cool people, right?

Is once a day compulsive? Wait, more like 5-6 times a week.

I dunno, i suppose it ain't much fun unless it's somewhat compulsive. Regardless of what's on ones mind, i'd say once a day is cool and maybe fit in a third on weekends.
