i know it's hard to get away, but you oughta drop everything one day and just go to baker, my friend is up there right now and its primo
Re: OT: Snowboarding... as in riding... snowboards...
It's not about getting away sadly, I'm pretty good at that for something as important as boarding.
I just bought a rather expensive new mountain bike this summer, and part of the deal with the wife was no season's pass this year, and not many solo trips. So I'll likely make it to Crystal and Baker sometime in Feb, and then hopefully another spring trip to Whistler. So I still can't complain but it's far less riding than I'm used to out here.
I thought this was going to be a lame winter, and so far it's been anything but.

It's an interesting place, rather small and not what you'd expect for all the history there. The real goods is all the back country stuff, the runs there are short and have lots of flat spots for you to get stuck in deep snow. Last time I was there they got 18" the night before, it was an epic day. I'd love to go watch the banked race, I got a chance to ride the course when I was there, super fun.

there is a bunch of vid up now to see the banked slolom...here's one
http://news.burton.com/?p=13524
baker is crazy, no way to really explain it til you see it, so much of the mountain is just gnar, crazysteep, very different geology than i have here...superfun 2 days though, on not so great snow...and i did go OB, up on the hemispheres and into the Canyon on a bluebird day (sat) with amazing powder, that one run made the whole trip for me, all bonus after that
(stock pic of the hemisperes)

also got one day on mt hood meadows, also not the best conditions , but sunny, and when it softened up a bit a few screamers from top to bottom made it worth the $74 (dayum)...in between mountain days we skated hood river and bingen parks and had killer red beer at the double Mountain brewery in hood river
pics to come, i took many then left my camera in my friends car in portland

yeh, it seems films like Art of Flight have taken the quality of board/adventure films to a whole other level, serios filmmakers with quality equipment are getting in on it, and when the flick makes a shit-ton of money (at least 20 mil for art of flight, on a 2 mil investment) more and more will get in on it

there is a Spike Jonez (jackass and a bzillion music vids director, also Where the Wild things Are) equivalent for skateboarding too called Pretty Sweet, came out last Nov....Unreal skating with amazing filming:

Whistler is huge but it's busy - even April is busy (Easter weekend).simmerdown wrote:heard alot of good things about whistler this weekend, mainly that it is Huge, and there comes apoint where there is practically nobody on the mountain, weekdays later in the season....sounds good

Getting up can be a pain because there's only really 2.5 gondolas and they are not huge capacity.
But I love it there - it's a very special place...
