what does a frozen lake sound like when the sun is setting?

like beautiful serene calm silence?
nope, it sounds like a goddamn space battle.

had my field recorder in my camera bag when I was out taking pictures in the middle of a very large lake. right as the sun was going down, it got crazy. non stop cracking in the distance, with crazy laser noises, non stop. I have never experienced anything else like that before.

That's f'in cool. Geez, either that's a dopler element moving away from your spot or the crack opens and ends low. Kinda freq sweepy or like it's a resonant wire plucked. Wild

I suspect since it was such a big lake, that it has to do with the whole ice surface resonating like a drum. sometimes when you throw a rock on a lake that's thinly frozen over it sounds like that, but much quieter. the smaller lakes with ice that thick, when they crack, they just make a thud noise.

this lake is about a kilometer or 2 across, and 8 or 9 long, so there's a whole lot more room for a crack to resonate.

I would LOVE to get a microphone under the water! that would be crazy!

it's just surreal to me that you are walking on frozen lakes.. our river just flooded from days of rain after a cyclone up north, and still it hasn't dipped below 30deg C

I have a fan on 24/7

Which lake was it? I wanna Google it and see what's producing that sound.

hmmm, I don't think it's that. The frequency would be well too low to hear it. Although the verb on the big cracks is prolly that. The resonances at least. Like a giant emt plate. It's the pitch element I'm onto. Without googling just yet, I bet it's the actual crack running down the ice, crazy fast for hundreds of meters in an instant. Like a crack in a pane of glass. I'm certain i'm hearing it down-pitch. I'm going to stick with the dopler thingy. A stereo contact pickup embedded in the ice would sound crazy cool.

there used to be a site where you could stream some mics under the antarctic ice - no idea what it was called now it was a few years ago - you could hear ice falling off and whales n shit..

heard the laser noises many times on the lil lake behind my house here, always wondering it i'm about to go thru...its like the giant version of the squeek you sometimes get when you bite an icecube slowly

never heard the lowpitch rumbles before though, thats crazy
