Found this on these on the SSL board :

The ideal DJ setup: Modified Xone, 2 decks, Ableton Live, Serato Scratch Live and a Red Sound C-Loops :D

It must be really good, because there is a row of people standing there staring at all that cool gear!

WHY do people go to a DJ gig to enjoy dance music and just stand there looking bored (and boring)?
15" PB 2.5 Ghz, 4 Gig RAM, 750 GB HD, Live 9 still no cue points or program change messages?!?. Doesn't do shit.

I just watched my friend use Serato all night last night, and was thinking the same thing. Two decks and one laptop for Serato, and one laptop for mixing in Ableton.

Damn that would be hot. Wonder if I could use my old PIII 900Mhz for serato??? Already have a five channel mixer....

hmmmmmm

On my Shuttle PC (P4, 2.8 HGz) I can run Serato and Live at the same time and switch screens with the TAB. I also use the C-Loops but miss a way to adjust the tempo of Live like a turntable. The modified A&H Xone has a special knob to do this in an easy way.

When the new Mac hardware (based on Intel) comes out you can do all this with one laptop :)

cracks me up how often this comes up as something new... he's been doing this for years now. he uses both computers at the same time, so you couldn't do this with one machine. one computer is source (FS or SSL), and the ableton computer is his efx rig for the dj stuff, as well as (duh) the occasional 'live' thing. the c-loops comes back into a channel strip for individual looping of whatever (more duh), plus it's the bpm clock source for the ableton computer.

in june he was using an alienware laptop for the ableton computer. usually it's 2 powerbooks, as it looks like in these pics. and of course testing SSL.

The 'new' thing about it is that he is playing with SSL instead of FS :D

The c-loops has no MIDI, the ableton computer gets it's clock from the Xone. This modified Xone has a button on it to set the tempo and to 'nudge' up/down the MIDI time, making Live behave like a deck.

oh yeh you're right.. the red sound (peavey) thing does bpm detection but not out. i always forget it didn't act like their other bpm/sync doohickey.

you can NOT run both programs off of 1 computer. when you run two seperate soundcards this way (with turntables, line leve, and 2nd soundcard line leve). you will cause a ground loop or 'buzzing' sound. try it and you will see what I'm talking about.
also, having everything on one computer isn't a great idea cause your doubling your chances of something going wrong. 2 computers, you always have a back-up running.

good luck!
A bunch of gear, cords, and a computer...

that set up works if you have the time to set it up in advance. But for most gigs, forget about it.

You are lucky if you can pop two line ins on the main (dj) mixer and get your stuff set up (hopefully while not pissing off the person playing before you)....

But after searching for the holy grail of DJ performance gear over the last several years (I've owned all that stuff that hawtin is using there), I think the best thing to have is a kick ass laptop, some kick ass midi interfaces, and an absolute mastery of Live and your ability to play the midi interfaces as an instrument.

And only two lines in for the DJ mixer... :) That's simple.

kabuki, you are right.
the best way to enjoy Hawtin is right in the middle of the dancefloor.
preferably equidistant from all 4 speakers in a quad sound set up

Not only did I own it, I still have it. It is the best DJ Mixer I've ever owned, bar none.
