Hey I've had my whole DAW/Virtual studio overhauled and have gone back too Live 3.0 8O (I kid you not).
Broke - Ha !!!!
I can't even work anymore due to health problems :( .
So I do and don't feel your pain  .
That said I had forgotten much how fun a midi free app can be until a few weeks back.
I had totally under utilised L3 before updating to 4 if I was to be brutally honest.
It has a magical understated simplicity about that is very Zen.
Quite frankly I'm loving it.
Won't be getting Live 5 at all myself.
Wont be getting anything new for that matter.
I can't even get enough for my notebook to afford a lightweight hospital friendly model.
Soldier on is all I'll say.

The human body can easily survive for over 4 weeks without food.

So go on a diet for 2 weeks; just water, vitamin pills and a few fruit n veg every day, and you'll easily afford the upgrade. You'll probably look more "DJ-chique" if you slim down a bit too.

You kids today, you don't know how easy you have it.

probably sound advice there, I've probably got enough fat on my body to just hibernate the whole winter!

As much as I really want the upgrade, I'm actually pretty content with live 4 - it doesnt leave me wanting for much (although the PDC thing still bugs me by wasting time in resampling etc)

ha ha. Just the other day I was speaking with my cousin who is 36 maybe 37, he was telling me about a surprise 40th birthday party in the works for another cousin. I exclaimed, "OH MY GOD, Pete is 40 years old????" My cousin looked at me like I was a little looney, then it slowly dawned on me that I myself am in my mid 30's - I will be turning 35 in a few months.......

Why is it I feel like a big kid???? Is it because I spend all night turning knobs and making strange sounds come out of my speakers and listen joyously to clicks and pops and blurps made by other people? Is it because I married a woman 10 years younger than me?

Whatever it is, I think I like it!

As far as the Ableton purchase goes, it will be a few weeks atleast before I can afford it myself. Every time I see that beautifull black box on the front page I start scheming a way to fit the purchase in...... guess that's part of the reason I am going in to work today, on a saturday.......

Oh and Fax, you've written about your situation before and I feel for you man. I swear, if I ever strike it rich I am going to buy you whatever laptop you want (right after I have bought one of these), I'll be hoping that you choose an apple but I wont force anything!

I figured on staying with L4 myself, works great for me and none of the 5 features jumped out as must-haves. Then the damn Operator deal reared it's beautiful head, and all hope was lost.

This morn I calmly and objectively started assessing the new features, and before I knew it, I was hovering over the buy button. Well, moments later I had the serials and away I went.

Working great so far, no crashes, freezes, glitches, pops or crackles here (iMac G5 1.8, OSX 10.4.2).

I can totally relate! Did the same thing (my wife's 12 years younger, actually, so it will probably eventually kill me...).

Look on the positive side, I wouldnt worry about upgrading so fast especially people with limited funds. Live 4 went through several upgrades to fix existing issues. When the money and time is right you may not even have to deal with the issues some others will face with Live 5. Clearly, the time you get get around to having the latest version you wont have as much stress some will have by holding out a while.

man If I was able to rationalise that one philosophy I'd probably own Live 5 AND have a Porsche in the driveway by now.

This damn beer/wine/weed makes me into a loser on all fronts.
