Can I record mic and stereo mix on different tracks?
Re: Can I record mic and stereo mix on different tracks?
because if you have a stereo file that you are using to play back... say... a beat to rhyme over... then it will use stereo output and inputs in Live for play back...
so, if you try and do vocals with that you will hear them on the master track/output in Live... and/or... your headphones.
one way to tell... if you only hear your mono vocal track in one ear, but you hear the stereo [instrumental] track in both.
it matters because the source of the stereo file... tells us how Live will interpret the track and assign your track's playback.
and... it matters because we're trying to help you and one of us asked.
WTF? i could tell you to read the manual, if you'd prefer.

Dude, I already said that I wanna RECORD, as in LIVE RECORD, my tracks. Why are you asking me about stereo files?H20nly wrote:because if you have a stereo file that you are using to play back... say... a beat to rhyme over... then it will use stereo output and inputs in Live for play back...

If you can't do something as simple as read, then please don't try to help people.
Never mind about this question. Either Ableton just can't do it, or nobody here knows how. I'll just have to use Kristal Audio Engine. It's a shame that Ableton can't do something a free, mini DAW can do.

oh i can read.TBonezzz wrote:I want one track to be my mic, where only what is said into my mic(my vocals) to be recorded, and I want the other track to record my stereo mix(everything my computer hears EXCEPT FOR my mic).
but since you want to be a ponce, i'll give you something to read. RTFM. and while you're at it pick up a book on audio because if you can't get your head wrapped around the difference between stereo and mono... EQ is gonna make you need a drool bucket.
sorry i bothered.

Lol. You're fucking stupid. You highlighted the point I made in my last post.H20nly wrote:oh i can read.TBonezzz wrote:I want one track to be my mic, where only what is said into my mic(my vocals) to be recorded, and I want the other track to record my stereo mix(everything my computer hears EXCEPT FOR my mic).

I'm talking about RE-FUCKING-CORDING. Read that, if you can read. You, on the other hand, are talking about stereo files used for playback. TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS.
I'm sorry you bothered, too...because all you've done is waste my time and make yourself look stupid. You should've kept quiet and saved us both.
By the way, moronic one, you were the one being a "ponce" first. But, since you can't read, I'm sure you can't see it.

Re: Can I record mic and stereo mix on different tracks?
@TBonezzz, I have downloaded and installed Kristal Audio Engine on my laptop. I have the Mixer and Waver windows open, and I would like to record my mic and stereo mix at the same, but on their own separate tracks. Can you assist me by walking me through the steps I need to take in the Waver window to accomplish this?TBonezzz wrote:Hey, everyone,
Well, what I'm wondering, is can I record my mic and stereo mix at the same time, but on their own separate tracks? I want one track to be my mic, where only what is said into my mic(my vocals) to be recorded, and I want the other track to record my stereo mix(everything my computer hears EXCEPT FOR my mic).
I know my hardware can handle this because I've already done it using a program called Kristal Audio Engine(a smaller DAW, basically, if you haven't heard of it). Kristal has poor VST support, though, which is why I'd rather do this with Ableton.
I'd really appreciate some assistance with this.
And this is no joke. I'm serious. Please advise.

Okie dokie. This is how I do it:outsidesys wrote:@TBonezzz, I have downloaded and installed Kristal Audio Engine on my laptop. #1 - I set MME as my audio device by going to Engine>Preferences...(at the top).
#2 - In the Waver, under Waver 1, where it says "Not Recording", I click that and pick Microphone. Under Waver 2, I do the same, except I pick Stereo Mix.
Done.
Now just click the record button on both Waver 1 and Waver 2 if you wanna monitor your input...then hit record on the transport window to record the tracks. It should work.
One thing to mention, though...I'm not sure if this is needed, but I also enabled Stereo Mix in the Recording Devices section of my windows audio.

Re: Can I record mic and stereo mix on different tracks?
Thanks. That helped, and explains a lot.
When using the native Windows MME API for sound cards, Live only allows you choose 1 input device, and 1 output device, which is global for all of Live's audio tracks. Therefore, this limits you to choosing either the Microphone device or the Line In device of your sound card.
Kristal allows you to choose those sound card devices per track.
Keep in mind that Live's feature/functionality focus is not for using sound cards that use the MME API, even though it does allow for this. Live's focus is with sound cards that use the ASIO API.
If you want to continue using Live, I would suggest investing in a USB sound card with ASIO drivers, and based on your needs, you would want one with at least 4 inputs (2 inputs for your stereo mix, and 1 input for your microphone). Your cost to do this starts at $100 US, and goes up from there.
Some vendors to check out are Lexicon, Presonus, Behringer, M-Audio, Akai, Focusrite, Tascam, and many others. Just start searching, and researching.
Good luck.

That's too bad that I need a $100+ sound card to do that with Live, but eh, it is what it is.
Re: Can I record mic and stereo mix on different tracks?
Yes. It is what it is.
Ableton Live isn't really a cheap program for basic functions.
It's a complex, high quality program for intermediate to advanced users.
I suggest learning your kicks in a smaller, cheaper DAW, then stepping up to Ableton.
When you have that moment of "Why can't I do this?" and suddenly realize that you need to step up into a bigger DAW, I'd do it then.
Also you're pretty stupid.

If you were on this program's nuts any harder, you'd be a pubic hair.Eventful wrote:Yes. It is what it is.

I'm guessing that you've either:
a) decided that Live is not for you, and therefore you're not going to need anyone's help on this forum, or
b) you have all the answers already, and therefore you're not going to need anyone's help on this forum.
If there's another option, I can't figure it out. Because, why else would you come onto a forum asking for help, not give enough information for anyone to help you, and then, when asked for more information in order to help you, start insulting people who are, you know, TRYING TO HELP YOU???
